In Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, you can choose one level 5 Bulbasaur or Squirtle from Honey at the Master Dojo after completing Mustard’s first trial in The Isle of Armor. The chosen Pokémon has the Gigantamax Factor. Honey gives you one, not both; to get the other, trade for it or transfer an eligible Pokémon through Pokémon HOME.
Get one from Honey at the Master Dojo
This route requires access to The Isle of Armor, the expansion content for Pokémon Sword or Pokémon Shield. The official Pokémon product page lists the Expansion Pass separately from the retail games.
- Travel to the Master Dojo on the Isle of Armor and begin Mustard’s trials.
- Complete the first trial: chase down and defeat the three Slowpoke that stole your rival’s dojo uniform.
- Return to the Master Dojo and speak with Honey. She offers a choice between Bulbasaur and Squirtle.
- Select the one you want. The documented gift is level 5 and has the Gigantamax Factor, according to Bulbapedia’s in-game gift listing and its Isle of Armor walkthrough.
What the Gigantamax Factor means
The factor matters after you evolve Bulbasaur into Venusaur or Squirtle into Blastoise: the fully evolved Pokémon can Gigantamax. It does not give you both starter species, so choose the one you most want to raise.
Get the other species by trading or using Pokémon HOME
If you chose Bulbasaur and want Squirtle as well, or vice versa, trade with another player or transfer an eligible Pokémon through Pokémon HOME. Nintendo’s Pokémon HOME transfer information lists Sword and Shield as compatible games and notes that a Pokémon can be moved into a game only if that species appears in the destination game. For a transfer, use the Nintendo Switch version of HOME to connect with your game; species compatibility still applies.
#1 Best Overall
- Catch, battle, and trade Pokémon on an all-new adventure in the Galar region
- Choose from three new partner Pokémon and encounter never-before-seen Pokémon
- Unravel the mystery behind the Legendary Pokémon Zacian and Zamazenta!
- Team up with other Trainers to participate in Max Raid Battles***!
- Battle wild Dynamax Pokémon in Max Raid Battles and try catching them***
A transfer is useful if you already have an eligible Bulbasaur or Squirtle available in HOME. A trade is an alternative if another player can provide the species you need. Neither route guarantees that a particular player or currently available distribution will supply it.

A 2020 promotion gave players Grookey, Scorbunny, and Sobble with Hidden Abilities after transferring Pokémon between Sword or Shield and Nintendo Switch HOME. Players claimed those gifts in the mobile HOME app, with the Switch and mobile versions linked to the same Nintendo Account; the promotion allowed one gift set per HOME account. It concerned the Galar starters, not Bulbasaur or Squirtle. See Pokémon’s promotion announcement.
Rank #2
- New entries in the main series of Pokémon RPGs arrive on Nintendo Switch simultaneously in late 2019
- The Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield games take place in the newly discovered Galar Region
- Galar is an expansive region with diverse environments - an idyllic countryside, contemporary cities, thick forest and craggy, snow-covered mountains
- Fans will have the opportunity to visit Gyms in the Galar region in their quest to become Champion
- Newly discovered partner Pokémon join in this new iteration of the games - Grookey, Scorbunny and Sobble
Nintendo’s Mystery Gift instructions explain how to unlock and redeem gifts in Sword and Shield, but do not confirm a current Bulbasaur or Squirtle distribution. The Honey gift is the documented in-game choice; the cited official pages do not establish a live event for either Pokémon.
