Pokémon Legends: Z-A makes a persuasive case for a more battle-focused Pokémon adventure. Its real-time combat and Mega Evolution are the main attractions, and reviewers have praised how fresh and fluid the fights can feel. But “near perfection” is a judgment, not a settled verdict: review accounts also flag uneven difficulty, battle bugs, a limited urban setting and rough visual detail.
What kind of Pokémon game is Legends: Z-A?
Officially, Pokémon Legends: Z-A is set in Lumiose City, where an urban redevelopment plan aims to shape the city into a place for people and Pokémon. The Pokémon Company foregrounds Mega Evolution and describes a real-time battle system; Nintendo likewise presents the fights as dynamic and real-time. That makes combat—not a journey across a succession of varied wilderness areas—the clearest point of distinction in the game’s pitch.

Nintendo lists the Nintendo Switch release date as October 16, 2025. It also offers a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, which Nintendo says has improved resolution and frame rates. That is an official platform distinction, not a controlled comparison or a guarantee of a particular performance result on every system. Nintendo’s product page gives the release and edition details, while The Pokémon Company’s official page describes the setting and core features.
Why the battles make the strongest case
The most consistent praise in the cited reviews is for the shift to real-time fighting. GamesRadar+ describes the fights as fast and fluid, and Tom’s Guide identifies real-time battles and Mega Evolution as the game’s primary focus. TechRadar, meanwhile, sees a blend of familiar Pokémon elements and fresh ideas, and says the play is engaging. Taken together, those impressions support the argument that Z-A gives the series a compelling new rhythm—especially for players who want battles to feel more immediate.
#1 Best Overall
- Venture into Hyperspace Lumiose in this additional story content that can be accessed after completing the main game
- Work with the mysterious baker, Ansha, to make donuts that awaken the Mythical Pokémon Hoopa’s power and grant you and your Pokémon a variety of useful effects
- Join Team MZ and the Mega Evolution Successor, Korrina, to investigate Hyperspace Lumiose, the otherworldly home to rare and hyper-strong Pokémon
- Discover new Mega Evolutions such as Mega Raichu X, Mega Raichu Y, Mega Chimecho and Mega Baxcalibur
- Claim Holo-X and Holo-Y in-game apparel items, which you can wear as soon as you are able to customize your character’s look and outfit in the main game
That praise remains reviewer judgment rather than a universal finding. The sources support a strong case for the combat’s appeal, but they do not establish that every player will prefer this approach to the series’ other battle systems. If your interest in Pokémon is largely about collecting, exploration or a broad variety of environments, the game’s central emphasis may matter more than the novelty of its fights.
Where the “near perfection” case weakens
Lumiose City is a focused setting, with a trade-off
A single city gives the story a coherent premise, but it also limits environmental variety. TechRadar specifically identifies limited variety in Lumiose City as a shortcoming. Players who enjoy moving between sharply different landscapes may find this setting less varied than a broader regional adventure.
Difficulty and battle issues are reviewer concerns
TechRadar reports concerns with difficulty scaling and battle bugs. Those are review observations, not evidence that every player or system will encounter the same problems, but they are relevant caveats for a game whose main selling point is combat. They make an unqualified claim of near perfection difficult to defend.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Visual polish is not uniformly praised
GamesRadar+ notes flat-looking textures. The same review reports a smooth experience on Switch 2, but that is one reviewer’s account—not a benchmark or assurance for all players. Nintendo’s stated resolution and frame-rate improvements for the Switch 2 Edition describe the edition’s intended platform benefits; they do not resolve every concern about visual detail.

Tom’s Guide lists the lack of voice acting as a shortcoming. Whether that matters will depend on how much you value spoken performances in a story-driven game; it is a separate consideration from the quality of the real-time combat.

Legends: Z-A looks most appealing if you want a Pokémon game built around immediate, battle-centered play and are interested in Mega Evolution. It is a less obvious fit if your priority is varied scenery or if reports of scaling and battle problems would spoil a combat-heavy game for you.

Choose between editions based on the system you plan to play on and the value you place on those officially described improvements; the available review accounts do not provide a controlled performance comparison between versions.
Verdict: near-perfect in direction, not without rough edges
The “near perfection” label works best as enthusiasm for the direction Legends: Z-A takes, not as a claim that the game is flawless. The official feature pitch and reviewers’ praise make a strong case for real-time battles and Mega Evolution as an engaging focus. The reported limits of Lumiose City, difficulty scaling, battle bugs and visual detail keep that praise qualified. For the right player, this may be a standout Pokémon adventure; the evidence supports a balanced recommendation, not an objective declaration of perfection.
