Before setting out in Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, learn three habits: ask your partners for clues, practice timed battle inputs, and try different Badges as you find them. On Nintendo Switch, the controls and Partner Ring make it easy to check in with your party while exploring. You do not need a fixed build or a walkthrough to get started.
Use your partners for hints and enemy information
On Switch, press ZL to ask your active partner for a hint. With Goombella beside Mario, press X to hear her observations about nearby people and places. Try these in-game prompts when you are unsure what to do next; they can point out useful details without interrupting exploration.
In battle, Goombella’s Tattle attack reveals information about an enemy, including its health, strengths, and tactics. Nintendo says that information remains available the next time the same enemy appears, so Tattling early can help you make better choices in repeat encounters. Nintendo Australia’s beginner guide explains these partner tips and other early-game mechanics.
Keep moving when an obstacle has no obvious solution
Some clues and obstacles depend on an ability Mario has not learned yet or a character he has not met. If you cannot interact with something or see a way forward, make a mental note and continue along the available route. You may be able to return once your options expand; backtracking is part of the exploration loop, not a sign that you have missed a required step.

- Join Mario on a timeless paper-adventure to uncover the mystery of the Thousand-Year Door
- Master badges and timing-based attacks to impress the audience in a theatrical twist on turn-based RPG combat
- Customize your approach to deep and rewarding RPG challenges with swappable partners and badges
- Experience an engaging story full of hijinks and witty dialogue
- Region-free compatibility: Region-free/unlocked game works on compatible systems; international version may differ in age rating, labeling or instructions
For optional tasks, check the Troubles Center on Rogueport’s east side. Its requests can lead to rewards or new friends, but you do not have to complete them before continuing the main story.
Practice attack timing and defense
Combat uses Action Commands: timed button presses that strengthen attacks when you perform them correctly. The timing takes practice, so use a battle against a familiar enemy to get a feel for it rather than expecting every input to land immediately.

- Action Commands: Timed inputs improve attacks and help fill the Star Power meter.
- Guard: Press A just before an enemy’s attack lands to reduce incoming damage.
- Super Guard: A precisely timed B press is more demanding, but can negate damage and hurt the attacker.
The audience can also contribute items or Star Power during battles. If the timing or battle system feels unfamiliar, seek out the purple-clad Battle Master in Rogueport for practice. Nintendo’s Switch tips page covers Action Commands, defensive inputs, and partner controls.
Choose level-ups to suit your play style
Each time Mario earns 100 Star Points, choose one of three upgrades. The choice is a trade-off, not a test with one correct answer.

| Upgrade | What it gives you | Consider it if you want… |
|---|---|---|
| Heart Points | More health | More room for mistakes and a sturdier safety margin. |
| Flower Points | More capacity for special moves | To use powerful moves more often. |
| Badge Points | More capacity to equip Badges | More flexibility to combine attacks and utility effects. |
Pick what addresses your current needs. You can favor survival, special moves, or a broader set of Badge effects without committing to a supposedly mandatory build.
Experiment with Badges and collect both upgrade currencies
Badges can grant new moves, strengthen attacks, reduce damage, or make Action Command timing easier. Equipping them uses Badge Points, so consider what you gain against what you have to leave unequipped. Swap Badges to try different combinations rather than assuming the first setup you choose is permanent.

Two collectibles serve different purposes:
- Shine Sprites: Take these to Merlon to power up partners.
- Star Pieces: Trade these with Dazzle in Rogueport Underground for Badges.
Notice these items while exploring: they feed into different upgrade systems, so do not treat one as a substitute for the other. Nintendo’s beginner guide covers the currencies and where to use them.

On Nintendo Switch, hold L outside battle to use the Partner Ring and choose a partner. In battle, press Y to swap places with the partner. Directional-button shortcuts can also move between menu tabs. These are Switch control tips; do not assume another version uses the same inputs. Some conveniences differ by version. Nintendo Life’s May 24, 2024 guide reports that fleeing a battle on Switch does not cost coins, unlike on GameCube, and describes different instructions for finding shortcut pipes. Check directions for your version before following a route from an older guide.
