To clear the Paldean Pokémon League Champion Assessment in Pokémon Scarlet or Pokémon Violet, defeat Rika, Poppy, Larry, and Hassel, then face Top Champion Geeta. All eight Gym badges are required to enter the Elite Four, and you can heal between battles—so prepare coverage for several types and use each break to restore your team.
Champion Assessment order and preparation
The battles are fixed in this order: Rika, Poppy, Larry, Hassel, and Geeta. The first four are the Elite Four; Geeta is the final Champion battle. For a progression reference, Serebii’s Elite Four guide lists the eight Gym badges as a prerequisite.
Plan for a team in roughly the high 50s to low 60s. Nintendo Life lists Rika’s Pokémon at levels 57–58 and Poppy’s at 58–59, and describes the assessment opponents as around level 60. Treat that as a preparation guide, not a minimum-level guarantee: moves, abilities, team composition, and your tactics all affect how difficult the fights are. Nintendo Life’s walkthrough provides the cited levels.
Build for coverage, not one opponent
- Bring several useful attack types rather than relying on one Pokémon or one type matchup.
- Keep answers for Ground, Steel, Flying, and Dragon opponents, as well as a mixed-type Champion team.
- Do not treat a type chart as a guarantee: dual typings and the moves an opponent carries can change a matchup.
How to beat Rika
Rika specializes in Ground. Water- and Grass-type attacks are useful starting points against Ground Pokémon. However, her Clodsire is also Poison-type, which makes a Grass attacker vulnerable to a dangerous matchup: Grass moves are not effective against Poison, and Poison attacks threaten Grass Pokémon. Keep another answer available rather than sending a Grass type in automatically. Nintendo Life’s guide lists Rika’s team and levels.

- Choose either Sprigatito, Fuecoco, or Quaxly, to be your first partner Pokémon before setting off on your journey through Paldea
How to beat Poppy
Poppy specializes in Steel. Fire and Ground attacks are strong options to include against Steel Pokémon. Check each Pokémon’s secondary typing and the moves it can use before committing to a single attacker; a nominal type advantage does not remove the risk of a counterattack. Nintendo Life lists Poppy’s team at levels 58–59.
How to beat Larry
Larry uses Flying-type Pokémon in this League battle. Electric- and Ice-type attacks are useful coverage to bring. Use an attacker that can withstand the moves Larry’s Pokémon may use, and avoid assuming that a Flying weakness alone makes a Pokémon safe to switch in.

How to beat Hassel
Hassel specializes in Dragon. Ice, Fairy, and Dragon attacks are useful ways to challenge Dragon Pokémon. If you choose Dragon attacks, remember that your own Dragon Pokémon may also be exposed to opposing Dragon moves; Ice or Fairy coverage can offer a different approach.
How to beat Top Champion Geeta
Geeta does not build her team around a single type, so keep a varied set of attacks available instead of carrying over a plan tailored only to Hassel. Her ace, Glimmora, Terastallizes into Rock. Preserve suitable coverage for that change and for the different opponents on her team. Nintendo Life’s walkthrough covers the Champion battle and Glimmora’s Terastallization.

A Nintendo Switch Online membership is not required. Each item can only be redeemed once.
Use the breaks to recover and adjust
You can heal between the assessment battles. Use each interval to restore the party before proceeding; the breaks are also a chance to revive Pokémon and reconsider which attacks or team members you still need. Gamer Guides’ Rika walkthrough also describes a break between each Elite Four or Champion fight.
