Is Pokémon Pokopia One of the Best Pokémon Games of All Time?

Pokémon Pokopia makes building a life with Pokémon its central activity. Here’s why it merits “one of the best” for some fans—and who may prefer battles.

Yes—if “best” means an inventive Pokémon spin-off with a compelling slow-life and building focus, rather than a battle-centered adventure. Pokémon Pokopia turns the series’ creatures into the heart of a cozy simulation about shaping habitats and making a place for Pokémon to live. Its strong critical reception and early sales give that case weight, but the all-time ranking remains a matter of what you want from Pokémon.

What makes Pokopia different?

Pokémon Pokopia is a life-simulation spin-off, not a conventional main-series Pokémon adventure. The Pokémon Company’s official page casts you as a Ditto transformed to look human. You build a new life alongside Pokémon, learning moves from friends to customize your environment, create habitats, garden, and invite Pokémon and friends to visit. Nintendo describes it as a “slow-life simulation” devoted to crafting, creating, and building.

That premise changes the role Pokémon play: they are companions and part of the world you are shaping, rather than simply opponents to battle or additions to a team. The core appeal is the ongoing work of making a welcoming place, with Pokémon helping shape that process. The official premise is described at The Pokémon Company’s Pokopia page and Nintendo’s announcement.

Is it one of the best Pokémon games?

There is a defensible case for that opinion, provided the criteria are clear. Pokopia is unusually original within the franchise, uses Pokémon as an integral part of its life-simulation loop, and has drawn strong critic attention. Nintendo Life’s March 2026 review roundup reported a Metacritic score of 89 from 49 critic reviews at that time. That is a dated snapshot, not a permanent or current score; the listing can change. The roundup is at Nintendo Life, and Metacritic’s listing includes both praise for Pokopia as one of the franchise’s best spin-offs and criticism that some building quests feel rigid and repetitive.

Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

Its reach is another sign that the concept resonated. Nintendo reported more than 2.2 million copies sold worldwide in the first four days after launch, including one million in Japan. The Pokémon Company later reported more than five million copies sold worldwide in the first four months following launch. These are separate, dated sales milestones—not interchangeable measures or proof that every Pokémon fan will love the game. See Nintendo’s March 12, 2026 announcement and The Pokémon Company’s August 14, 2026 announcement.

Those points support “one of the best” as a reasoned judgment about originality, the simulation loop, and reception. They do not establish an objective all-time ranking across the entire Pokémon catalog. If your definition of a great Pokémon game depends on team-building, battles, and familiar progression, Pokopia may not rank as highly for you.

Who is Pokopia for?

It is a strong fit if you want to build and explore

  • You would rather craft, shape habitats, garden, and spend time with Pokémon than spend most of your time battling.
  • You enjoy a cozy simulation whose appeal comes from gradually creating a place and seeing Pokémon inhabit it.
  • You are interested in a Pokémon game that takes a substantially different approach from the main-series formula.

Consider a main-series game if battles are the point

Pokopia’s official description centers on crafting, creating, building, and a slow life with Pokémon. It is therefore a less natural choice if you primarily want conventional battles and battle-led progression. The distinction is about the game’s stated focus, not a claim that one style is better than the other.

Platform and release details

Pokémon Pokopia released on March 5, 2026, for Nintendo Switch 2. Nintendo’s UK listing identifies Nintendo Switch 2 as the system, so owning that platform is a prerequisite; the title is not listed there as a Nintendo Switch game. Check your regional storefront for local availability and terms. Nintendo’s UK game listing gives the system and release date, and The Pokémon Company UK posted an available-now notice on launch day.

What about the Expansion Pass?

The Pokémon Company reported that Part 1 of the Pokémon Pokopia Expansion Pass, Bubbly Basin, released on August 5, 2026. That is a later content update, separate from what made the base game’s launch distinctive; the cited announcement establishes the release of Part 1, not the contents or release dates of any later parts.
