Pokémon Pokopia multiplayer offers several different ways to play together, but it is not unrestricted co-op throughout the game. You can visit a friend’s town in a limited spectator mode, build together in Palette Town, work on a persistent Cloud Island, or share a specific area through GameShare. Online play requires an internet connection, a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership, and matching game versions.

Pokémon Pokopia multiplayer modes at a glance

Mode Can players build? Does the host need to be present? What is shared?
Visit a town No unrestricted collaborative building; visitors have limited options in Spectator Mode. Yes. The host opens the visit from their town. Visitors can explore, interact with Pokémon for Pokédex and habitat information, and collect daily items from the Pokémon Center PC.
Palette Town Yes, when the host turns off Spectator Mode at the Pokémon Center PC. The host sets up the shared area. Players can build, craft, discover Pokémon, and create habitats together in the shared area.
Cloud Island Yes, as a shared island project. No. The island remains available when its owner is away. The island’s Pokédex, challenges, rewards, and island progress are shared. Island bags are separate from players’ town inventories.
GameShare Players can access the specific shared area during a session. It is a session-based share. The shared software is available only while the GameShare session lasts; this is not persistent Cloud Island play or ownership of the game.

Visit a friend’s town

For a quick look at someone else’s town, the host opens the Pokémon Center PC, selects Link Play, then chooses Invite Others to Visit. Nintendo says a town visit can include up to three other friends. Visitors enter Spectator Mode: they can look around, interact with Pokémon to see Pokédex and habitat information, and collect daily items from the Pokémon Center PC, but their actions are limited. This is a visit, not a shared building session. Nintendo’s multiplayer overview describes the mode and visitor limit.

Build together in Palette Town

Palette Town is the option for hands-on co-op in a shared building area. The host can turn off Spectator Mode at the Palette Town Pokémon Center PC, allowing the group to build, craft, discover Pokémon, and make habitats together. Because everyone can edit the shared space, agree on plans before moving or changing things. Nintendo’s multiplayer overview explains the host setting and activities.

How Cloud Islands work

A Cloud Island is an online island that persists when its owner is offline, so invited players can continue to join it. The owner can share the island’s address and optionally require a Link Code. If the owner enables Virtual Mode, visitors see a virtual copy rather than making changes to the real island. Nintendo’s Cloud Island guide covers island access and settings.

#1 Best Overall
Pokémon Pokopia - Nintendo Switch 2
  • Shape the world and build a cozy new life with Pokémon as a Ditto transformed to look like a human.
  • Use other Pokémon’s moves, like Bulbasaur’s Leafage, to revitalize and navigate the world around you.
  • Meet and befriend more Pokémon as you help nature flourish.
  • Gather materials to create items and furniture, till the fields to grow delicious crops, build homes for the Pokémon you meet, and more—there’s so much to do!
  • Experience a world with varied weather, real-time days and nights, and other surprises.

Shared island progress, separate town inventories

  • Each Cloud Island has its own bag. Items cannot be carried between the island and a player’s town.
  • Everyone on an island contributes to its shared Cloud Island Pokédex.
  • Island challenges and rewards are shared through the island’s PC.
  • The owner’s downloadable content can make additional items, habitats, and Pokémon available to players connected to that Cloud Island.

In short, the island is a shared project, but it does not combine participants’ town inventories. Nintendo’s Cloud Island guide documents these distinctions.

Back up an island before relying on rollback

Cloud Island backups are manual, not automatic. The owner can keep one backup at a time, and a backup can be restored only once per day. Treat the backup as a deliberate recovery option, not an automatic history of every change. See Nintendo’s Cloud Island guide for the backup rules.

What GameShare does—and does not do

GameShare lets one player share a specific game area with someone who does not own Pokémon Pokopia. Nintendo describes Palette Town as an area that can be shared this way, but access lasts only for the sharing session. GameShare is therefore different from joining a persistent Cloud Island, and it does not give the guest a copy of the game. Local and online GameShare have different supported systems and setup requirements; check Nintendo’s multiplayer overview and the current Pokémon Pokopia game listing for eligibility and setup details.

Meet the online requirements

  • Internet and membership: Online play requires an internet connection and a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. Nintendo’s Nintendo Switch 2 game listing also says a Nintendo Account is required for online services.
  • Matching software: All players need the same software version, and the game must be updated to use its internet features. Nintendo’s update support page lists version 2.0.1, released September 7, 2026, as current on October 8, 2026. Check that page for a newer update before playing.
  • Local wireless: Local wireless is separate from online play. Nintendo’s listing says multiplayer requires additional games and systems; the exact compatible local setup depends on the current regional instructions.

Which multiplayer mode should you choose?

  • For a short visit or tour: Invite friends to your town; they can explore in Spectator Mode.
  • For building together in a host-led session: Use Palette Town and turn off Spectator Mode.
  • For a shared project friends can join while the owner is away: Set up a Cloud Island, and decide whether to protect access with a Link Code or allow visitors to use Virtual Mode.
  • For sharing an area with someone who does not own the game: Use GameShare if your systems and session meet Nintendo’s current requirements.
