Mark Cerny’s PS5 Pro technical seminar explained the console’s advanced ray tracing and the machine-learning hardware behind PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). It also announced a deeper Sony Interactive Entertainment–AMD collaboration focused on machine-learning technology for graphics and gameplay. Since then, Sony has described an upgraded PSSR for PS5 Pro and announced a separate upscaling technology, QSSR, for the base PS5.
What did Mark Cerny say about the PS5 Pro?
On December 18, 2024, Sony published Cerny’s announcement of a technical seminar about the PS5 Pro. At the time, he was identified as Lead Architect, PS5 and PS5 Pro. Sony said the presentation would explain what “advanced” means in Advanced Ray Tracing, the difference between FLOPS and TOPS, and the challenges of building efficient machine-learning hardware for PSSR. It was a technology-focused presentation, not a showcase for new game announcements or gameplay footage. Sony’s seminar announcement set out that scope.

The announcement also made the partnership news explicit. Cerny wrote: “AMD has been a fantastic partner for SIE for many years now, and I’m honored to announce that we have begun a deeper collaboration with a focus on Machine Learning-based technology for graphics and gameplay.”
What did Sony claim the PS5 Pro improves?
Sony’s November 7, 2024 launch release compared the Pro with the then-current PS5. These are Sony’s manufacturer figures, not independent benchmark results:
#1 Best Overall
- Ray Tracing - Immerse yourself in worlds with a new level of realism as rays of light are individually simulated, creating true-to-life shadows and reflections in supported PS5 games.
- Faster Loading - Fast-travel across the map and get back into the game almost instantly with the PlayStation 5 console’s ultra-high-speed SSD and fast load times.
- Stunning Visuals - Experience the vast world in stunning 4K and HDR at 120 FPS (with a 4K and HDR compatible TV or display)
- Breathtaking Immersion - Discover a deeper gaming experience with support for haptic feedback, adaptive triggers, and 3D Audio technology.
- Backwards Compatibility - Play over 4,000 PS4 games on PS5. Enjoy faster and smoother frame rates in some of the PS4 console's greatest games.
- 67% more GPU compute units.
- 28% faster memory.
- Up to 45% faster rendering for gameplay.
- Ray tracing at double, and at times triple, the speed of the then-current PS5.
Sony qualified the feature claims: the cited Pro features are available only in select games enhanced for PS5 Pro, and features vary by game. The release also listed a 2TB SSD, a DualSense controller and a U.S. launch MSRP of $699.99; that is a launch price, not a verified current price. Sony’s PS5 Pro launch announcement contains the specifications and qualification.
What is Sony’s partnership with AMD?
The public description is specific but limited: Sony and AMD are working more closely on machine-learning technology for graphics and gameplay. Sony later connected work on the updated PSSR algorithm and neural network to Project Amethyst, its partnership with AMD. Those announcements do not establish a particular future console, product, or release date.
What is PSSR on PS5 Pro?
PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution is Sony’s AI-driven upscaling technology for PS5 Pro. In a February 27, 2026 update, Cerny described PSSR as “an AI library that analyzes game images pixel by pixel as it upscales them,” and said it had been used to boost effective resolution in over 50 PS5 Pro titles to date. That count is Cerny’s statement, not a third-party tally.
Sony said its upgraded PSSR takes a very different approach to both the neural network and the overall algorithm. Resident Evil Requiem was named as the first title to use that version. Sony attributed the updated technology to Project Amethyst and said it received six additional months of refinement for PS5 Pro players. These are Sony’s descriptions; the announcement does not provide an independent image-quality benchmark. Sony’s PSSR update explains the changes.

Sony’s 2026 corporate strategy presentation also described updated PSSR as available on PS5 Pro, using machine learning to enhance image clarity and deliver 4K visuals at high frame rates. It named Saros and Ghost of Yōtei as games that had benefited from PSSR. These are corporate descriptions rather than independently measured performance results. Sony’s corporate strategy presentation provides that framing.

Yes, Sony announced QSSR for the base PS5 on October 1, 2026. Quick Spectral Super Resolution is a distinct performance tier of AI upscaling, not the upgraded PSSR release for PS5 Pro. Sony described QSSR as using a streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned implementation for PS5. Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei were named as the first titles to use it, and Sony said the library would be offered broadly to PlayStation developers.
Sony’s graphics R&D principal engineer Daniel Craig said, “While PSSR remains the gold standard on PS5 Pro, QSSR provides some notable improvements to both image detail and image stability on PS5.” Insomniac Games’ Mike Fitzgerald described pixel-level clarity and stability in Marvel’s Wolverine; Sucker Punch Productions’ Jasmin Patry said QSSR resolves fine details in Ghost of Yōtei characters and environments with temporal stability not previously possible on PS5. These are statements from Sony and the named developers, not independent comparative testing. Sony’s QSSR announcement describes the base-PS5 implementation.
| Implementation | Target hardware | What Sony says about it | Named games |
|---|---|---|---|
| PSSR, updated version | PS5 Pro | Different neural network and overall algorithm; tied to Project Amethyst. | Resident Evil Requiem; Sony also named Saros and Ghost of Yōtei as games benefiting from PSSR. |
| QSSR | Base PS5 | Streamlined neural-network architecture and a hand-tuned PS5 implementation. | Marvel’s Wolverine and Ghost of Yōtei. |
Sony has not presented these announcements as a direct, independently measured image-quality comparison between QSSR and PSSR. The distinction to keep clear is the target console and the technology name: updated PSSR is for PS5 Pro; QSSR is the announced performance tier for the base PS5.
