To max a stat from zero in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet, use 25 matching vitamins for 250 effort values (EVs), then add 2 matching feathers to reach the 252-EV stat cap. For battle training, fight Pokémon that yield the EVs you want while holding the corresponding Power Item. Choose your spread first: Pokémon can have at most 510 EVs total and 252 in any one stat.

How EV limits and stat gains work

EVs are effort values that help shape a Pokémon’s stats. A Pokémon can receive up to 510 EVs in total, with a maximum of 252 in any single stat. Two fully trained stats use 504 EVs, leaving 6 for another stat or unused. At level 100, four EVs correspond to one stat point, so those remaining EVs do not necessarily produce another stat point.

EVs are separate from a Pokémon’s level, nature, and individual values (IVs). Choose an allocation for the role you want the Pokémon to fill; there is no single best spread for every Pokémon.

Choose between vitamins and battle training

Method How it works Best fit Trade-off
Vitamins and feathers Each matching vitamin adds 10 EVs; each matching feather adds 1. Quick, direct training or exact finishing adjustments. Vitamins can be expensive in Pokédollars.
Power Items and targeted battles A matching held Power Item adds 8 EVs in its associated stat per EV-yielding battle, in addition to the defeated Pokémon’s yield. Saving currency or training multiple party members through battles. Requires suitable encounters and tracking the EV yields of defeated Pokémon.

Feathers are most useful for precision rather than building a full spread. In either method, other Pokémon in your party may also gain EVs from battle experience, so check their spreads if you are training several at once.

Max a stat with vitamins and feathers

  1. Check the starting spread. Open the Pokémon’s summary and inspect the stat graph. A Pokémon used during the story may already have EVs in several stats, so the amounts below reach 252 only when starting that stat at zero.
  2. Give 25 matching vitamins. Each vitamin adds 10 EVs to its associated stat, for 250 EVs total.
  3. Add 2 matching feathers. Each feather adds 1 EV, bringing the stat to 252.
  4. Repeat for another stat if needed. A common 252/252 spread uses 25 vitamins and 2 feathers for each of the two stats.
  5. Inspect the graph again. If you are allocating the remaining 6 EVs, use them only if they suit the build. Do not assume that another full vitamin gives an exact 2-EV finish: EV gains stop at the cap, so the excess portion of an item’s gain is wasted.

A GameWith guide last updated in 2022 reports vitamins at 10,000 Pokédollars each and availability at Chansey Supply after three Gym Badges. Treat those shop details as guide-reported rather than guaranteed current conditions; check the shop in your game.

Train EVs through battles

  1. Pick the stat you want to raise. Buy its corresponding Power Item at Delibird Presents.
  2. Find a species with the desired EV yield. GameWith lists these examples: Lechonk for HP, Yungoos for Attack, Scatterbug or Tarountula for Defense, Houndour for Special Attack, Hoppip for Special Defense, and Fletchling, Wingull, Buizel, or Magikarp for Speed. Encounter availability varies by location, so verify the species and its yield where you are playing.
  3. Hold the Power Item and battle normally. The guide reports that a matching item adds 8 EVs in its associated stat per EV-yielding battle. Wild Pokémon yield 1–3 base EVs, so the total can also include the defeated Pokémon’s own yield.
  4. Use ordinary battles or capture encounters. Let’s Go auto-battles do not award EVs. The guide also says a fainted Pokémon does not gain EVs.
  5. Check the summary graph as you go. Track the existing spread and the EVs gained from each species; battle training is less direct than applying items, especially when party members share battle experience.

Correct an unwanted EV spread

Use a berry associated with the stat you want to lower. The GameWith guide reports that each matching berry removes 10 EVs from that stat. Inspect the graph after each correction and adjust further as needed; the cited guide does not establish an all-at-once reset procedure. Matching feathers can then add EVs one at a time for fine tuning.
