In the days before Pokémon Legends: Z-A launched on October 16, 2025, some customers reported that Pokémon Center canceled their preorders. Contemporary coverage cited differing explanations, including payment reauthorization problems and an overselling message, but did not establish the full scope or one confirmed cause. The game has since been released.
What was reported about the canceled preorders?
On October 15, 2025, Insider Gaming reported customer accounts describing cancellations shortly before launch. Some customers said they had been told their payment method could not be reauthorized; others described being told the game was oversold.

One customer post dated October 14 reproduced a purported Pokémon Center support reply that attributed that customer’s cancellation to overselling at shipment and said the pending charge had been voided. That is a customer-posted copy of correspondence, not an independently authenticated or publicly issued Pokémon Center statement. It cannot establish what happened to other orders.
The available accounts do not establish how many customers were affected, which regions or editions were involved, or whether the preorder gift was affected in every case. No incident-wide cancellation count or confirmed cause was reported.

Why might Pokémon Center cancel a preorder?
Pokémon Center’s general preorder FAQ, updated August 13, 2026, says cancellations can occur when there is an issue with billing or shipping information. It explains that an order may be canceled if the payment card is invalid or the payment cannot be authorized during shipping processing.
The separate general order-cancellation article, updated February 3, 2025, lists product unavailability and card details that have changed since the order was placed among common reasons for cancellation. It also says an entire order can be canceled if one item is unavailable.
These are general customer-service policies, not a retrospective explanation of every Legends: Z-A cancellation. A payment issue may explain some customers’ experiences, while the overselling explanation remains an attributed account rather than a confirmed company-wide cause.

Will you get your money back?
Under the general preorder policy, Pokémon Center says it will not charge customers for a canceled preorder. However, a pending authorization can remain visible until the customer’s financial institution releases it. That temporary hold is not the same as a completed charge, and the FAQ does not promise a specific release date for an individual bank.
Pokémon Center describes two payment authorizations in its normal preorder process:
- An initial authorization is placed when the preorder is submitted and may drop off after five to seven business days.
- The card is charged when the order ships, with another authorization three to five business days before shipping.
Those timings describe the general process; they do not establish the status or resolution time of a particular canceled order. Check the order details and contact Pokémon Center Support for account-specific help. The FAQ also warns that an item may not be available to preorder again after cancellation, and it does not guarantee reinstatement.

What game and preorder offer were involved?
The Pokémon Company announced that both Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition would release on October 16, 2025. The announcement also advertised a Pokémon Center gift with purchase for qualifying preorders. The canceled orders therefore concerned a released game, and for some customers the lost preorder may have mattered because of the associated promotion as well as the game itself. The announcement does not establish that every affected order included the gift.
If you are replacing a canceled order now, confirm that a listing is for the edition and platform you want and check the seller’s current stock and delivery estimate. The Pokémon Center promotion was tied to its preorder offer; the announcement does not say that other retailers included the same gift.
