What Traditional Indian Board Games Made Visible About Life—and What PUBG and Warcraft Don’t

Gyan Chaupar made spiritual progress and setback visible through board play. That is a real contrast with PUBG and Warcraft, but not proof of superior learning outcomes.

Some Indian board games made spiritual ideas part of the game itself: in Gyan Chaupar, movement across the board could represent progress toward liberation or a setback shaped by one’s actions. That is a meaningful contrast with PUBG and Warcraft, but it is not proof that those video games cannot teach life lessons—or that historical players always used Gyan Chaupar as a formal lesson.

What the title’s comparison can—and cannot—claim

The strongest supported argument is about design and symbolism, not educational effectiveness. Some surviving Gyan Chaupar boards explicitly connect play with moral or spiritual ideas. The available sources do not show that players learned those ideas more effectively than players learn from PUBG or Warcraft, or that either video game is incapable of teaching anything about life.

That distinction matters: a board can encode a worldview without every game being a lesson, and a game can prompt reflection without spelling out a moral framework. The contrast is therefore best understood as a question about what a game makes visible, not a verdict established by comparative learning research.

How Gyan Chaupar turned spiritual progress into play

Gyan Chaupar, also spelled Gyan Chauper, is described as a predecessor of modern Snakes and Ladders. Its boards used movement, ladders, and snakes to express spiritual ideas, including karma, the cosmos, and liberation. A move upward or downward could make progress and setback legible through the game’s basic action: moving from one square to another.

A University of Eastern Finland page summarizing Jacob Schmidt-Madsen’s study reports that he examined nearly 150 surviving boards. The boards reflect differing community worldviews: Vaishnava Hindu and Jain versions adapted the game in ways that fit their respective traditions. They should not be treated as one standardized board or a single universal doctrine.

The symbolic framework is clearer than the precise social use. As the UEF page puts it, “The boards preserve those spiritual ideas, although exactly how people used them for teaching, divination, or personal reflection remains less certain.” The imagery supports describing Gyan Chaupar as a game with spiritual meanings; it does not establish that every historical session was a formal teaching exercise.

Why Pachisi, Chaupar, and Chausar should not be treated as one game

Traditional Indian board-game history is not a single story, and familiar names can conceal differences in equipment and rules. W. Norman Brown’s Penn Museum article, originally published in 1964, discusses Pachisi, Chaupar, and Chausar as related but distinct games. Brown describes Chaupar as using long dice and a cross-shaped board, while Pachisi used cowrie shells and differed in play.

Brown identifies the first description of Chaupar or Chausar in the sources he consulted with Abul Fazl’s account of Akbar’s court in the sixteenth century. Abul Fazl wrote, “From times of old, the people of Hindustan have been fond of this game,” but, in Brown’s account, gives no earlier date. Brown distinguishes older gaming equipment and dice from evidence for the recognizable cross-shaped board. The digitized article is a historical reference and may not reflect current Penn Museum views, so its account is useful when attributed rather than presented as a definitive dating of the game.

Brown also traces Parcheesi, a commercial American adaptation, to the 1860s. That history is a reminder that a modern game bearing a familiar name or resemblance need not preserve every rule or meaning of an earlier form.

What this contrast means for PUBG and Warcraft

Gyan Chaupar offers a particularly explicit example of mechanics carrying a moral or spiritual framework: the board’s imagery and movement could represent a worldview. PUBG and Warcraft are named in the title as a cultural contrast, but the sources available here do not compare their educational outcomes with Gyan Chaupar. Nor do they establish that playing either game cannot prompt lessons about decisions, cooperation, risk, or consequences.

It is more accurate to ask what a game teaches—or invites players to notice—than to declare one tradition educational and another not. A board’s symbolism, a player’s interpretation, and a measured learning outcome are different things. Evidence for the first does not by itself prove the third.

What survives, and what remains uncertain

Documentation of Indian board games is limited, making sweeping claims about a single national tradition or a universal teaching purpose unsafe. The digital project Ancient Indian Boardgames describes documentation and preservation as goals, while the National Council of Educational Research and Training mentions games such as Pachisi and Chaupar in a school-learning context. Those references support present-day interest in heritage and learning, but they do not resolve how every historical community played or what players learned.

A 2023 preprint by Eleanor A. Dauenhauer and Paul J. Dauenhauer analyzes three Snakes and Ladders/Gyan Chauper variants through simulation, examining board structures and associations between virtues and vices. It is not a study comparing player learning in those games with PUBG or Warcraft. Claims about relative effectiveness would require direct studies, defined learning outcomes, and comparable evidence for the games being contrasted.

A grounded way to read the legacy

The enduring point is not that old games were automatically wiser or that modern video games have nothing to teach. It is that some Gyan Chaupar boards placed a moral or spiritual map inside the rules and imagery, turning ideas about progress and setback into visible moves. That makes the game a striking historical example of values expressed through play—while leaving room for uncertainty about how individual players understood and used it.
