Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind Review — A Nostalgic Brawler With Uneven Detours

Rita’s Rewind is a campy, nostalgic Power Rangers brawler with co-op, but its driving and Megazord detours are uneven and replay value is limited.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is at its best as a colorful, camp-loving beat ’em up—and less convincing when it leaves that formula for driving and giant-robot fights. It has the franchise affection and co-op setup to make a fun group game, but its mixed gameplay and limited replay value temper the appeal.

What kind of game is Rita’s Rewind?

Developed by Digital Eclipse, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind is a retro-styled action game built primarily around 2-D beat ’em up combat. The official PlayStation game page also describes arcade-style shooting and driving, Dinozord piloting, and Megazord boss fights.

Digital Eclipse said in an October 29, 2024 PlayStation.Blog post that about 70% of the game focuses on fighting Putty Patrollers, with the remaining portion drawing on super-scaler arcade games such as Space Harrier and Out Run. That is the developer’s description of its design, not an independently measured playtime breakdown. The structure explains the central trade-off: the brawling is the main attraction, while the other formats interrupt it rather than consistently improving it.

How good is the combat?

GameSpot reviewer Steve Watts found the core brawler enjoyable and faithful to the original show’s campy spirit. That is where Rita’s Rewind most naturally fits: colorful pixel-art action that draws on the simple, heightened appeal of watching the Rangers fight their way through waves of enemies.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita’s Rewind - Play Station 5
  • Classic 90's look and feel with hand-drawn pixel art. Fan-favorite enemies pulled from different seasons of the hit tv show.
  • Events and episodes that players remember from the show have been remixed. Action-packed, 2-D brawler gameplay with arcade-style shooting and driving sequences.
  • Pilot all of the original Dinozords. Jump into the cockpit of the legendary Megazord and take down gigantic bosses.
  • Offline and Online support for up to 6 players.
  • Languages: Voice Over: English; Interface/Texts: English, French, Italian, German, Spanish (EU).

The game’s affection for the source material gives its familiar brawler framework a clear identity. It is more appealing as a compact, nostalgic action game than as a deep combat system or a campaign built around sustained mechanical variety.

Do the driving and Megazord sections work?

The arcade-style diversions broaden the game beyond ordinary beat ’em up stages, but they are also its least reliable parts. Watts reported frustrating vehicle sequences and weak hit detection in vehicle and Megazord sections. Those problems matter because they make the shifts in format feel less like welcome variety and more like obstacles between the stronger brawling stretches.

Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Ritas Rewind - Nintendo Switch
  • In Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: Rita's Rewind, the team faces off against a robotic reincarnation of the Power Rangers' long-time nemesis. Robo Rita has conjured a portal to send herself back in time so she can finally vanquish the Power Rangers by forming an alliance with her younger self. Working together, Robo Rita and Rita Repulsa rewind, rewrite, and remix the past in an attempt to stop the very formation of the Power Rangers, altering the course of history.

The result is an uneven genre blend: the game’s idea of a Power Rangers arcade adventure is appealing, but the brawler is the part that carries it. If you are mainly looking for polished driving or giant-robot combat, the available critical assessment does not support treating those modes as the draw.

What is the story about?

The plot uses a time-travel premise to rework the early Mighty Morphin Power Rangers era. Robo Rita, a robotic reincarnation of the Rangers’ enemy, joins forces with her younger self and travels back in an effort to prevent the team from forming. Xbox Wire describes it as a “what if” retelling of roughly the first 20 episodes, set in the mid-1990s, while noting that it also folds in enemies and elements from elsewhere in the franchise. See the developer perspective in Xbox Wire’s November 15, 2024 interview.

The premise gives the game room to revisit recognizable material without presenting itself as a straightforward replay of the television series. Its appeal is chiefly the chance to spend time in a playful Power Rangers adventure, rather than a claim that it retells every part of the show’s continuity precisely.

Can you play Rita’s Rewind with friends?

Yes, though player counts and online details depend on platform. The PlayStation listing specifies one to four players and optional online play, with up to two online players requiring PlayStation Plus. Steam lists both online co-op and shared/split-screen co-op. The available listings do not verify cross-platform play, so do not assume friends on different systems can join the same session.

How long is it, and is there reason to replay?

Watts reported playing roughly four hours, finishing the story and some post-game content. That is his account of one review session, not a definitive completion-time estimate. He also found little replay value, so the game is a better fit for a short nostalgic run—especially with friends—than for players seeking a long campaign or a strong reason to return repeatedly.

Platforms, release and current price

The game launched digitally on December 10, 2024, for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam, according to the launch announcement. Steam lists Digital Eclipse as developer and Digital Eclipse and Atari as publishers.

The launch announcement listed a $34.99 launch price and an E10+ rating. That price is historical, not a statement of what the game costs today; current price, physical availability, and subscription requirements should be checked on the relevant platform store.

What are players saying on Steam?

Steam showed 65% positive from 714 user reviews when accessed on October 8, 2026. This is a live storefront snapshot, not a critic-review aggregate, and the count and percentage can change. It provides a limited view of Steam user sentiment rather than a verdict for every platform or player.

Verdict: who should play Rita’s Rewind?

Rita’s Rewind is easiest to recommend to Power Rangers fans who want a compact, nostalgic brawler and can enjoy it with friends. Its core combat captures the show’s campy energy, but the vehicle and Megazord sections are less successful, and the campaign offers limited incentive to replay. If those detours or short-term appeal are dealbreakers, the game’s strongest qualities may not be enough to carry it.
