Its precision platforming, layered combat and interconnected world give the series a confident 2D reinvention. Calling it Ubisoft’s best game in years, though, depends on what you compare it with: the available review evidence is strongly favorable, but it does not establish a ranking across the publisher’s full catalogue.
Why The Lost Crown makes the case
Ubisoft describes The Lost Crown as an action-adventure platformer set in a mythological Persian-inspired world. You play Sargon, one of the Immortals, exploring the time-cursed Mount Qaf in a mission to rescue Prince Ghassan. The design brings together acrobatic combat, platforming, puzzles, quests, time powers and exploration across connected environments. Ubisoft says the game targets 60 fps on all platforms. Ubisoft’s official game page lays out those features; the description is useful for understanding the design, though it is not independent evaluation.

Movement gives exploration its rhythm
The pitch rests on more than combat or nostalgia: traversal is a central part of moving through Mount Qaf. Platforming and exploration are woven together, with puzzles and time powers adding to the journey. That combination makes the game’s strongest argument for itself its joined-up design: getting through the world is part of the adventure, rather than a break between fights.
Combat and platforming have critical support
Ubisoft’s page reproduces several positive review excerpts. VentureBeat called it “One of the best Metroidvanias ever” and scored it 90/100. Game Informer gave it 9.5/10, praising its platforming and combat loop. PC Mag also scored it 9.5/10, calling it a strong example of the 2D Metroidvania format. These are critics’ statements and scores quoted by Ubisoft, not a portfolio-wide comparison of Ubisoft games. Read the excerpts on Ubisoft’s page.

Does it deserve to be called Ubisoft’s best game in years?
As a verdict about recent Ubisoft action-adventures, the claim is defensible: the cited critics praise the very elements that define the game—platforming, combat and its execution as a Metroidvania. But “Ubisoft’s best game in years” is broader. It could mean the best game across every genre the publisher releases, or the best recent entry in the action-adventure space. The available evidence does not compare The Lost Crown systematically with Ubisoft’s whole output, so the superlative remains an opinion rather than a demonstrated ranking.
Steam offered another positive signal at the time its listing was checked: English-language reviews were “Very Positive,” with 85% positive from 3,213 reviews; recent reviews were “Mostly Positive,” with 78% positive from 279 reviews. Those figures are a changing user-review snapshot, not critic scores or sales data, and should not be read as current without checking the listing. See the Steam listing and current review mix. What kind of game is it, and when did it release?
The Lost Crown is a 2D, Metroidvania-style action-adventure built around exploration, traversal, combat and progression through Mount Qaf. Ubisoft lists January 18, 2024 as the game’s release date. The PC Steam release followed on August 8, 2024; those dates refer to different releases, not a contradiction. Steam identifies Ubisoft Montpellier as developer and Ubisoft as publisher. Steam’s listing gives its PC details.

In an announcement dated August 8, 2024, Ubisoft said the game was available on PC through Ubisoft Store and Epic Games Store; PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch and Amazon Luna; and Ubisoft+ Premium. That is a dated availability statement, not a guarantee of current access in every region or storefront. Check the store for your platform for current availability and terms. Ubisoft’s Steam-release announcement also described the Complete Edition and upgrade options.

What the Complete Edition includes
Ubisoft’s August 2024 announcement described the Complete Edition as the base game plus the Mask of Darkness story DLC, the Prosperity Bird amulet, a digital adventure guide and four Sargon outfits. Owners of the base game could buy a Complete Upgrade Pack or purchase Mask of Darkness separately. Ubisoft’s current game page has inconsistent outfit counts in different edition summaries, so confirm the bundle contents on the platform store before buying.
What Mask of Darkness adds
Ubisoft describes Mask of Darkness as a story chapter focused on Radjen, with four new biomes, traversal hazards, enemies, bosses and amulets. The official page gives an estimated duration of four to six hours. The DLC is included in the Complete Edition as described in Ubisoft’s dated announcement; do not assume it is included with every base-game purchase.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
It is a strong fit for players who want a 2D action-adventure where exploration and precision traversal matter alongside combat. Its genre and design are clear strengths; whether it is your personal Ubisoft standout will depend on how much you value that focused Metroidvania structure over the publisher’s other kinds of games.
