Yes—Pokémon Legends: Z-A has a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition, but the game is not exclusive to Switch 2. It is available for both the original Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2. The Switch 2 Edition adds enhanced performance and graphics; owners of the Switch version can use an Upgrade Pack to access those enhancements on Switch 2.
What does the claim get wrong?
The wording “isn’t a Nintendo Switch 2 game” is ambiguous. If it means the game is not exclusive to Switch 2, that is correct: Pokémon Legends: Z-A is also available for the original Switch. If it means there is no Switch 2 version, that is incorrect. The Pokémon Company announced a separate Switch 2 Edition, released alongside the game on October 16, 2025. The title does not identify who made the original claim, so its provenance is unclear.
The official announcement says the Switch 2 Edition is playable on the original Switch. On that console, it runs as the Switch version and does not provide the features that rely on Switch 2 specifications. The Pokémon Company’s release announcement and Nintendo UK’s product page describe the editions and this compatibility distinction.
How the Switch and Switch 2 options differ
| Option | What it means | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| Pokémon Legends: Z-A for Nintendo Switch | The standard Switch game | Playable on the original Switch. It can also serve as the base game for an upgrade on Switch 2. |
| Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition | The enhanced edition | On Switch 2, it offers improved graphics and performance, including higher resolution and frame rates. On an original Switch, it runs with Switch-level features. |
| Nintendo Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack | An upgrade for owners of the Switch game | Lets you access the Switch 2 Edition on Switch 2. The base game must also be present on that Switch 2 system. |
| Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension physical bundle | An announced game-and-DLC bundle | Scheduled for October 29, 2026, with the game and Mega Dimension on one game card. |
Do you have to buy the game again for Switch 2?
If you already own the Switch version, you can buy the Switch 2 Edition Upgrade Pack rather than purchase the full game again. Nintendo Support says the Upgrade Pack is available through Nintendo eShop on Switch 2 and the Nintendo Store. You still need the base game on the Switch 2 system to play the upgraded edition. Check your regional storefront for current availability and price; no single price applies across regions. Nintendo Support’s upgrade and DLC information gives the requirements.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Can you play the Switch 2 Edition on the original Switch?
Yes. The Pokémon Company says the Switch 2 Edition can also be played on the original Switch. It does not deliver Switch 2-specific enhancements there, so the practical experience is the Switch version rather than the higher-resolution, higher-frame-rate presentation available on Switch 2.
What about Mega Dimension?
Mega Dimension is compatible with both the Switch and Switch 2 editions, according to Nintendo Support. The Pokémon Company has also announced a physical Switch 2 Edition + Mega Dimension bundle scheduled for October 29, 2026; its game and DLC are included on one card. The bundle’s stated date is a scheduled release date, not confirmation that it is already available. The Pokémon Company’s bundle announcement has the announced details.
