Dragon’s blood is a shared name for red resin or latex from several unrelated plants, so the word “pure” alone does not tell you what a product contains. Look for its Latin plant name, its form, and its stated use before choosing it.
What is dragon’s blood?
Dragon’s blood is a trade and common name for red plant materials, not one standardized ingredient. A 2004 study of historical samples in the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew’s Economic Botany Collections discusses materials attributed to Dracaena cinnabari, historically associated with Socotra; Dracaena draco; Southeast Asian Daemonorops palms; and Croton species. The researchers used Raman spectroscopy to analyze the samples. The different botanical sources are not automatically interchangeable. Edwards, de Oliveira and Prendergast, Analyst (2004).
Dracaena resin
A 2021 review focuses on dragon’s blood from Dracaena. Liu and colleagues report that 11 Dracaena species and three subspecies produce red resin, and that more than 300 compounds have been isolated from Dracaena species. Croton latex, or Sangre de Drago
The U.S. FDA’s 2012 botanical review identifies the red, viscous bark latex of Croton lechleri as a substance commonly known as dragon’s blood. This plant product is also sold as Sangre de Drago. It is distinct from resin products made from Dracaena or Daemonorops. The FDA review records traditional use in countries including Peru, Ecuador, Colombia and Mexico; that history does not establish that a retail product treats a condition. Are products sold as pure dragon blood interchangeable?
No. The shared name can refer to different plant sources and forms. For example, a seller describes a Croton lechleri product as an external-use resin, while a marketplace listing describes Daemonorops draco powder for incense use. Those seller descriptions identify different product categories; they do not independently verify purity, efficacy, or sourcing. How to choose a dragon’s blood product
Choose by the stated plant source and intended use, rather than by the word “pure.” Before buying, compare these details on the product label or reliable product information:

- Botanical source: Look for a Latin species or at least a genus, such as Croton, Dracaena or Daemonorops. If none is stated, the common name does not resolve the product’s identity.
- Form: Check whether it is a resin, liquid latex or powder. These forms are not descriptions of a single standardized ingredient.
- Intended use and directions: Follow the specific label. Do not assume an incense powder is suitable for external use, or that latex sold for external use is incense.
- Ingredients and sourcing: Review the ingredient list, directions and any evidence the seller gives for its purity or sourcing. “Pure” is a seller descriptor, not independent verification.
A resin burner or charcoal belongs only with a product identified and directed for incense use; it is not a general accessory for every product sold as dragon’s blood.

Liu and colleagues’ 2021 review describes traditional uses of dragon’s blood for wound care, pain, bleeding and digestive complaints. These are accounts of traditional use, not proof that every product under the name is safe or effective for treating a condition. The plant species, preparation and route of use matter, and findings about one source should not be transferred automatically to another.

A seller’s directions are product guidance, not independent clinical evidence. Do not treat the broad name “dragon’s blood” or a “pure” claim as evidence that a product is a medicine.
