Network symptoms call for connection checks; local stuttering calls for PC performance checks. Try the steps below in that order, starting with diagnosis before changing settings or buying hardware.
1. Identify what kind of lag you have
Steam treats high network latency and low or choppy frame rates as different troubleshooting problems. Use these observations to choose the right branch; they are clues, not a guaranteed technical test:
- Delayed actions or trouble joining: Your game may look smooth, but actions arrive late, a player cannot connect, or you see “No response from host.” Start with the network and connection steps.
- Choppy image or stuttering: The picture itself judders or slows. Check whether this happens in other games too, then investigate local PC performance.
- One player or everyone? If only one player is affected, compare that player’s connection and PC with the others. If everyone is affected, testing another host can help distinguish a host-related issue from a local one.

2. Check latency and try a different host
Steam recommends checking server latency and notes that a geographically distant server can make lag more likely. Pummel Party uses player-hosted sessions in the context of the developer’s connection advice, so the distance between players and the host may matter. Try a session hosted by someone closer to you and see whether the symptoms change; it is a diagnostic test, not a guaranteed fix.

3. Pause bandwidth-heavy activity
Downloads and other network-heavy programs can compete with a game session. Steam specifically calls out bandwidth-using applications such as chat clients, FTP programs, and browsers as possible contributors to lag or choppy gameplay. Pause downloads and unnecessary network activity on your PC, then test the same kind of session again.
4. Check the router and local connection
Steam advises keeping the router in an appropriate environment and notes that overheating routers have been reported to cause connection problems and lag symptoms. Make sure the router has ventilation and is not covered or crowded into a hot space. Restarting it is also a basic diagnostic step, although it is not a specific instruction in Steam’s cited guide.

5. Compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if the wireless connection seems unstable
If you suspect Wi-Fi drops or fluctuates, try a wired Ethernet connection and compare the same game session. This is an optional troubleshooting test, not a Pummel Party-specific fix prescribed by the developer. Ethernet will not correct a distant host or an upstream connection problem, so do not treat it as a universal cure.
6. Check firewall and antivirus rules for connection failures
If you cannot join or host, or see “No response from host,” check whether your firewall or antivirus is blocking Pummel Party. Rebuilt Games advises adding an exception for the game in firewall and antivirus rules in its connection troubleshooting post. Follow the controls for your security software; do not disable protection broadly.

7. Check the listed outbound ports, then test another host
For the same host-response failure, Rebuilt Games lists these ports as outbound: 14242, 14300, 14301, and 58117. Its post also recommends trying different hosts. These are developer-listed outbound ports for this connection issue, not a general instruction to forward ports on your router. If you are unsure how your network handles outbound traffic, ask your network administrator rather than changing unrelated router settings.
8. Verify the game, update it, and send logs if the problem remains
- Verify the game files in Steam: Open your Library, right-click Pummel Party, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Steam will check the installation and replace files it identifies as damaged or missing.
- Make sure the game is updated: Rebuilt Games’ official announcements record past fixes for heavy lag tied to affected saved games and spikes associated with certain online chat messages. Those are historical examples, not evidence that either issue is currently present. If you notice a repeatable trigger, record it.
- Contact the developer with logs if the issue persists: Rebuilt Games asks players to send
Player.logandPlayer-prev.logfrom%appdata%/../LocalLow/Rebuilt Games/Pummel Party/to [email protected]. Include what happens, when it happens, and whether changing hosts or connection conditions changes it.

When the problem looks like low FPS, check your PC
If the image itself stutters rather than actions arriving late, compare your PC with the minimum specifications on the Pummel Party Steam listing.

The game listing’s Windows 7 minimum does not mean the Steam client still supports Windows 7: Steam states that Steam Client support is Windows 10 and later as of January 1, 2024. Steam also cautions that meeting minimum requirements alone does not guarantee high FPS or strong in-game performance. Compare your CPU, memory, graphics hardware, and operating system before considering an upgrade; a component change is not justified by the word “lag” alone.

Choose the next test by symptom
- Actions arrive late, or joining fails: Check latency, pause bandwidth-heavy activity, inspect the router environment, and follow the developer’s firewall, outbound-port, and alternate-host advice for “No response from host.”
- Only one player has the problem: Have that player compare Wi-Fi with Ethernet if wireless seems unstable, and check their local network and PC separately.
- The image is choppy in multiple games: Focus on local performance and compare the PC with the listed minimum specifications.
- The problem follows a repeatable in-game trigger: Update the game and include the trigger in a support message with the requested logs if needed.
