Axios reported in 2023 that Raytheon said it did not want to know whether job candidates played the game. That response addresses a specific viral story—not every employer’s hiring process or every security-clearance authority.
Did Raytheon ask job candidates whether they play War Thunder?
A January 2023 social-media story claimed a Raytheon reference check asked a candidate whether they played War Thunder. Axios reported that Raytheon pushed back, saying it did not want to know whether potential candidates played the game. The reported response undermines the viral claim; the reviewed material does not establish a War Thunder-specific screening rule.
Raytheon’s official hiring pages describe background checks and clearances that can depend on the role, but do not name War Thunder. The available evidence cannot show what every interviewer might ask, or what every employer or clearance authority considers. Screening requirements vary by position and authority. See Axios’s account of the rumor and response and Raytheon’s careers information on security clearances.
Playing the game is not the same as posting restricted documents
The concern that has led to real incidents is not ordinary gameplay: some players have posted classified or otherwise restricted military material to the game’s forums while arguing about vehicle details. The Swedish Psychological Defence Agency’s 2023 report describes three such incidents since 2021 involving documents about British, French and Chinese tanks. Axios also reported a later forum post related to the F-16A and earlier document incidents.

Those cases concern individual users’ disclosures, not evidence that playing the game itself creates a security-clearance problem. The Swedish agency’s count and description are specific to its report and its scope; they should not be read as a complete tally of all such incidents. Why have War Thunder forums appeared in document-leak stories?
Players sometimes use real-world documents to contest the accuracy of a vehicle’s in-game specifications. That does not make it safe or permitted to post material whose release is restricted. Gaijin’s Military Restrictions rules prohibit classified material unless it has been officially declassified and restrict military technical information whose disclosure is controlled by law. The rules warn that simply waiting does not automatically declassify a document, and that unauthorized disclosure may lead to prosecution or liability.

Do not upload a document to win an argument about a vehicle. Use material that has been publicly released by its manufacturer or another source clearly authorized to publish it. The forum rules are Gaijin’s policy, not a complete account of the laws that apply in every country; this is not legal advice.
Axios quoted Gaijin founder Anton Yudintsev saying, “Our players are very passionate about War Thunder and military vehicles, and sometimes they’re too passionate,” and, “We’ll never use classified or restricted information in our work. It’s both illegal and pointless, as we’ll have no means to determine if those ‘secret documents’ are even genuine.” These are Yudintsev’s statements as quoted by Axios, not independently verified conclusions about the authenticity of any posted document or the law in every jurisdiction.

Does War Thunder’s anti-cheat scan your PC?
Gaijin’s April 30, 2026 explanation says the PC version uses BattlEye, which operates at kernel level, alongside Viking, a ring-3 anti-cheat embedded in the game client. According to Gaijin, Viking runs during online sessions and scans RAM, running processes and overlays for patterns associated with cheats. The company says it generates a report only when a match is detected, and that the report contains data specific to the violation.
Gaijin also says Viking does not have administrator-level privileges, while BattlEye operates at kernel level. Its stated retention periods depend on the data and outcome: data supporting a ban or directly related to cheat development may be kept indefinitely; signature-match data that does not result in a ban is deleted within one year; and data on suspected cheating considered irrelevant is deleted within three months, often sooner. These descriptions reflect the publisher’s account, not an independent audit. Details are in Gaijin’s April 30, 2026 anti-cheat explanation.

What data does Gaijin say it processes?
Gaijin’s current privacy policy covers its games, accounts, websites, forums and related services. It lists categories that include account and contact information, device and usage information, analytics, advertising interactions and security data. The policy identifies service and account security—including preventing unauthorized access—as a processing purpose.
This is a separate issue from whether an employer regards a player as a security risk. The policy describes Gaijin’s stated data practices; it is not independent proof of how those practices are implemented. See Gaijin’s privacy policy.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat should players take away?
- Simply playing: The evidence reviewed does not establish ordinary gameplay as a security-screening disqualifier.
- Applying to Raytheon: Axios reported that the company did not want to know whether candidates played War Thunder; that is a reported response to one viral story, not a universal hiring or clearance policy.
- Posting military documents: This is a distinct and potentially serious issue. Follow the forum rules and do not share material unless it is clearly authorized for public release.
- PC privacy and anti-cheat: Gaijin describes anti-cheat scans and service data processing, but those practices do not establish an employer’s security assessment of a player.
For account protection, Gaijin recommends using a strong password and enabling two-step authentication. Its December 21, 2023 Fair Play post also reported blocking 6,818 accounts in the prior month for rule violations involving bots and cheat software; that figure concerns anti-cheat enforcement, not clearance decisions or classified-document leaks. See Gaijin’s Fair Play post.
