Xenoblade Chronicles X Switch 2 Upgrade Draws Image-Quality Criticism Despite 60 fps

The Switch 2 Edition’s up-to-4K TV output has not prevented image-quality criticism. Here’s what reviewers say about reconstruction, handheld play, 60 fps and upgrade options.

Reviews of Xenoblade Chronicles X: Definitive Edition – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition criticize its image clarity and reconstruction, with the problems reported as more noticeable away from docked play. The upgrade still brings a meaningful benefit: reviewers say the move to 60 fps makes a substantial difference to motion. Nintendo’s advertised resolution figures are maximums, not a promise of native rendering or consistently sharp images.

What Nintendo promises—and what that does not mean

In its February 19, 2026 announcement, Nintendo of America says the Switch 2 Edition adds “up to 4K¹ resolution” and “up to 60 fps” in TV mode, and up to 1080p and up to 60 fps in handheld mode. Nintendo’s announcement distinguishes the two play modes and qualifies each figure with “up to.”

An output-resolution ceiling does not establish the game’s native rendering resolution, nor does it guarantee that every scene will look crisp. Upscaling or other image reconstruction can produce a softer result or visible artifacts even when the output signal reaches a high resolution. That distinction helps explain how an edition can advertise 4K output and still draw criticism for image quality.

What reviewers criticized

Review coverage focused on image clarity and reconstruction, with criticism particularly apparent outside docked play. The Digital Foundry video listing is dated and titled in its published result; other review coverage also reports image-quality concerns. The review source describes the visual trade-off alongside the performance improvement. These are reviewers’ assessments, not an admission by Nintendo.

Nintendo Switch 2 System
  • The next evolution of Nintendo Switch
  • One system, three play modes: TV, Tabletop, and Handheld
  • Larger, vivid, 7.9” LCD touch screen with support for HDR and up to 120 fps
  • Dock that supports 4K when connected to a compatible TV*
  • GameChat** lets you voice chat, share your game screen, and connect via video chat as you play

The available reporting does not provide a verified named reviewer quotation or a transcript suitable for quoting, so the criticism is best understood in summary rather than as a direct quote. Nor does the material establish a measured native resolution or quantify how often specific artifacts appear.

The 60 fps improvement is a separate part of the verdict

The criticism of image reconstruction does not cancel out the performance upside. The review source says the jump to 60 fps makes a substantial difference, which can make movement feel smoother. That benefit concerns motion and responsiveness; it does not by itself improve sharpness or remove reconstruction artifacts.

Should you buy the Switch 2 Edition or upgrade?

Choose based on how you play and which trade-off matters most. If you value smoother motion, the 60 fps improvement may be compelling. If image clarity is your priority—especially in handheld play—the reported softness and reconstruction issues are a reason to be cautious. The review criticism was more pronounced outside docked play, so consider your usual mode rather than judging the upgrade by its TV-mode maximum alone.

Has a later update fixed the image quality?

The available evidence does not establish whether a later patch specifically corrected image reconstruction. Nintendo’s support page says updates must be applied to enjoy added features and content on Switch 2; consult Nintendo’s update guidance and the game’s current update history before buying or comparing versions. An update requirement is not evidence that the reported image-quality issue has been fixed.
