NPCs can explain the world, offer quests or services, provide clues, create challenges, or make a setting feel lived in. Their behavior may be scripted or simulated; “AI-controlled” does not necessarily mean generative AI.
What does NPC mean in a video game?
NPC stands for non-player character. Epic’s Fortnite documentation defines an NPC as any character in a game that is not controlled by a player. The key distinction is control—not whether the character looks human, speaks, or behaves intelligently.
In Unreal Engine terminology, a Pawn is an in-game avatar or persona that can be controlled by a player or by the game’s AI; an AI Controller can possess a Pawn representing an NPC. This illustrates how a game can separate a character’s in-world body from the system that directs it. It does not mean every NPC needs sophisticated AI.
This article uses NPC in the video-game sense. The acronym also appears in tabletop role-playing and online slang, which are different uses.

What do NPCs do in games?
NPCs serve the game’s design, not just its story. A character may have several roles, and its dialogue or behavior can give the player a reason to act.
- Explain the world or mechanics: introduce a location, teach a system, or offer a clue.
- Set goals: give a quest, point toward a destination, or reveal information that changes the player’s next move.
- Provide services: trade goods, offer upgrades, or perform another in-game function.
- Create opposition: patrol, attack, or otherwise challenge the player.
- Make the world feel inhabited: follow routines and interact with surroundings, even when the player has no quest for them.
Epic’s UEFN conversation guide describes dialogue for background information, gameplay explanations and clues, exchanges of goods and services, and choices that move a player toward or away from a path. A conversation can also connect to quest outcomes: accepting or declining can change what happens next. The design question is not simply how much a character talks, but whether its words or actions help the player understand or affect the game.

Are NPCs controlled by AI?
Often, but “AI” in games can mean conventional programmed behavior rather than a generative language model or human-like reasoning. A game may use scripts, rules, state changes, or simulated routines to decide what an NPC does.
Scripts and authored choices
Roblox Creator Hub’s NPC kit documentation describes characters whose scripts handle behaviors such as roaming and attacking. Creators can adjust settings such as patrol behavior, attack radius, and damage. In UEFN, creators can build a conversation graph from speech, response, and event nodes, then branch it according to player responses. These approaches make behavior and available consequences explicit.

Simulated routines
Ubisoft’s account of Assassin’s Creed Origins describes NPCs with schedules and motivations: they may travel, sleep, eat, or work, and their needs can intersect with those of other characters. Ubisoft also describes varying update states and frequencies according to distance, a way to manage how much simulation the game performs for nearby and distant characters. This is an example from one game, not a universal NPC system.
Generative conversation and game actions
Generative systems are a separate, emerging approach. Microsoft Research describes work on grounding conversational NPC exchanges in game context and allowing a character to invoke game API functions. Its Minecraft example explores natural-language interaction connected to tasks such as finding resources or crafting. This is research, not evidence that Minecraft generally ships with such NPCs or that NPCs in games work this way by default.

Ubisoft described NEO NPC on March 19, 2024, as an R&D prototype made with Nvidia Audio2Face and Inworld’s language model. Writers shaped character backstories and conversational styles, then iterated on model output; Ubisoft also described guardrails and input filters. The company called it a prototype and said more work was needed before implementation in a game, so it should not be mistaken for a broadly released feature.

A useful NPC has a clear role and gives the player something meaningful to understand, choose, or do. More dialogue is not automatically better: a short clue that changes a decision may contribute more than a long conversation that has no connection to the game.

- Purpose: Is the character there for atmosphere, challenge, information, a service, or companionship?
- Player-facing interaction: Does the player receive fixed dialogue, choose among authored responses, or speak in open-ended language?
- Gameplay connection: Can an interaction change a quest, provide a service, or trigger a permitted game event, or does it only produce dialogue?
- Character and story consistency: Do the character’s words and actions fit their personality, the plot, and the current game state?
- Boundaries and failure handling: What happens when a player enters unexpected or inappropriate input, or asks for something that conflicts with the character or game state?
- Simulation scope: How many characters need routines or detailed behavior, and how often must those systems update?
These considerations matter whether behavior is scripted, simulated, or generative. For a generative prototype, character direction and boundaries are especially important: a system that can produce more varied replies still needs to remain coherent with the game.
Are generative NPCs common in games?
Industry-wide generative-AI figures do not establish how many games use generative NPCs. The Associated Press reported figures from a Game Developers Conference report released in January 2024: nearly half of surveyed developers said generative-AI tools were used in their workplace, 31% said they personally used them, and 37% of developers at indie studios reported workplace use. Roughly four out of five surveyed developers said they worried about ethical use of AI. These are general workplace and industry figures relayed by AP, not measurements of NPC adoption, and they are not current 2026 rates.
AP also described experiments and demonstrations involving AI-driven NPC interactions in Retail Mage and Nvidia’s ACE demonstration in Mecha BREAK. Such examples show interest in more responsive interaction; they do not establish that these capabilities are standard across games. The practical distinction remains: many NPCs use authored behavior, while generative conversation is a particular design approach with additional questions about control and game integration.
