Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door has become one of my favourite Nintendo games because its story, turn-based battles and paper-based exploration all feel connected: Mario’s odd little world is also the game’s central toolset. The Nintendo Switch version, released May 23, 2024, brings the GameCube adventure to newer hardware with revamped graphics, an updated soundtrack and a few named convenience features.

A treasure hunt that gives the world room to surprise you

The adventure begins with a map from Princess Peach and a search for the Crystal Stars. The X-Nauts are also after the treasure hidden behind the Thousand-Year Door, so Mario’s hunt quickly becomes a contest involving the people and places he encounters along the way. Nintendo’s official product description frames the journey around that central mystery.

That setup gives the game a clear destination without reducing the trip to a straight line. The world is made of paper, but it is not merely a visual joke: Mario’s shape-changing abilities help make the setting playable. He can fold into a plane or a boat, or turn sideways to squeeze through narrow openings. Those transformations let exploration share the same playful logic as the art.

Why the battles are a big part of the appeal

Combat is turn-based, but choosing an action is only part of a turn. Attacks use timing-based inputs, and battles play out before an audience that Mario can impress. Nintendo sums up the system as a “theatrical twist on turn-based RPG combat.” The stage-like presentation gives each encounter a sense of performance while the timing keeps the player involved moment to moment.

Badges make room for different approaches

Badges let players customize Mario’s stats and abilities, giving equipment choices a meaningful role in how a fight feels. Crystal Stars, meanwhile, unlock special moves. Together, the systems add decisions beyond selecting an attack: which abilities to bring, how to use them, and when to make a more powerful move part of the turn.

What the Switch version changes from the GameCube original

Nintendo describes the Switch release as a version of the GameCube classic with revamped graphics and an updated soundtrack. It also names updated quick-travel pipes and a Partner Ring for switching partners. These are the specific comparison points Nintendo highlights; the product description does not quantify the visual or audio changes or provide a complete feature-by-feature account of the two releases.

How to play it today

Nintendo’s US store lists a physical Nintendo Switch edition, released May 23, 2024—twenty years after the GameCube original. The listing says it supports one player on a single system and can be played in TV, tabletop or handheld mode. Those details make the Switch edition straightforward to fit into different play setups, whether the console is docked or being used on the go.

Nintendo Support notes that a new software update became available July 9, 2024, but the surfaced support information does not specify its changes. That is not enough to attribute any particular fix or feature to the update.
