In August 2025, PEAK co-developer Aggro Crab publicly blasted CLIFF, a Roblox climbing game that gaming coverage described as closely resembling PEAK. The next day, a report said CLIFF’s developer had announced it would shut the game down. The episode was a public dispute—not a documented court ruling or confirmed Roblox enforcement action.
What happened between PEAK and CLIFF?
PEAK is a climbing game released on Steam in June 2025. It was made by Landcrab, a joint venture between Aggro Crab and Landfall, following a February 2025 game jam, according to Eneba’s retrospective account. The report says PEAK attracted more than a million players within two weeks of launch; that is a secondary-source-reported player figure, not an independently verified sales total.
CLIFF was a separate Roblox climbing experience. Gaming coverage described it as closely resembling PEAK and reported that its developer had acknowledged PEAK as an inspiration. Similarity and acknowledged inspiration are relevant to understanding the dispute, but neither by itself establishes infringement.
What did the developers say?
Aggro Crab’s criticism
On August 4, 2025, Aggro Crab posted, as quoted by Eneba: “tbh would rather you pirate our game than play this microtransaction-riddled Roblox slop ripoff.” The description of CLIFF as a “ripoff” and its monetization as “microtransaction-riddled” were the studio’s judgments, not findings from an independent comparison.

CLIFF’s reported shutdown announcement
On August 5, Eneba reported that PewStudio founder GKN announced on the developer’s official Discord that CLIFF would shut down. The report quoted GKN: “Upon the request of you and the creators of the games that inspired us, we have decided to shut down our game completely.” The available account documents the announcement as reported by Eneba; it does not independently verify the game’s subsequent status through Roblox.
Was CLIFF legally found to copy PEAK?
No legal finding is established by the sources covering this episode. They do not document a court ruling, formal infringement determination, or Roblox enforcement action against CLIFF. It is therefore more accurate to describe this as a public criticism followed by a reported developer shutdown announcement—not as a proven case of copyright infringement or a Roblox takedown.

A 2026 peer-reviewed article in the International Journal of Communication analyzes shovelware and financialized development on Roblox as broader platform issues. It mentions Rights Manager as a tool for reporting copied creations, but makes no finding about CLIFF or this dispute. That scholarly context helps explain why derivative games and creator protection attract concern; it does not resolve the facts or legal status of this particular game.
What did Roblox say about discovery and AI-created games?
On July 16, 2026, Roblox announced Build, a mobile-first AI creation feature. The company said its discovery systems are designed to emphasize long-term retention, adding: “Our discovery systems are designed to highlight games with long-term retention, which doesn’t include AI slop.” That is Roblox’s general description of its discovery approach, not a response to CLIFF or evidence of action in the 2025 dispute. Roblox also reported 132 million daily active users in that announcement; the figure is company-reported.

Roblox said Build-created games would undergo review and enter the same retention-based discovery pool as other experiences. The announcement described an initial alpha rollout in New Zealand beginning in July 2026, with a free base level and paid options for power users; it does not establish global availability. These later statements concern Roblox’s broader creation and discovery plans, not CLIFF’s outcome.

The episode shows how quickly a perceived imitation can become a public fight when a popular indie game inspires a separate experience on a large platform. But the record supports a narrow conclusion: Aggro Crab objected publicly, CLIFF’s developer was reported to have announced a shutdown after requests from game creators, and Roblox’s role remains unestablished. Wider scholarly discussion of Roblox shovelware and platform economics offers context, not a case-specific verdict.
