How much will the PS6 cost?
Sony has not announced a PS6 price or launch date. In its Corporate Strategy and Earnings Announcement Q&A, the company said no decisions had been made about the next-generation platform’s timing or pricing. That means there is no reliable official figure to use for budgeting yet.
Sony president and CEO Hiroki Totoki made the uncertainty explicit in remarks reported by GameSpot on May 8, 2026: “We have not yet decided on at what timing we will launch the new console, or at what prices.” GameSpot’s report also quotes him saying Sony expected memory prices to remain very high in FY2027 as supply stayed short.
Will the PS6 cost $1,000?
That figure is a hypothetical, not an announced price, a Sony forecast, or a verified estimate. Former PlayStation executive Shawn Layden discussed the possibility of a $1,000 console in an interview reported by GamesRadar+ on October 5, 2026. His point was about whether consumers would pay that much if the improvements felt incremental—not about what Sony plans to charge.

Layden questioned whether upgrades such as better ray tracing and more teraflops would be compelling enough to make buyers “pull out $1,000.” His comments are an opinion on perceived value, not evidence that the PS6 will cost that amount. Read GamesRadar+’s report.
Why could the next PlayStation face price pressure?
Sony has identified memory as a cost concern for console hardware. Higher memory prices raise both the bill of materials and manufacturing costs; passing those increases on to buyers could significantly affect adoption, according to the company’s investor-relations Q&A.

Sony said it had secured the memory volume it needed for 2026 and agreed on pricing to some extent. Its prevailing assumption was that memory prices would remain elevated and supply-demand conditions tight through 2027. The company said it would consider hardware prices alongside promotional spending, cost reductions elsewhere, sales and go-to-market strategy, and possible business-model adjustments. These are factors Sony says it is weighing, not a disclosed PS6 pricing formula.
What current PlayStation prices tell you—and what they don’t
Sony’s recommended retail prices effective April 2, 2026 provide a current-market reference, not a way to calculate the PS6’s future price. The company attributed the increase to “continued pressures in the global economic landscape.” Regional recommended prices can change.

Because Sony has announced neither a PS6 price nor a launch date, the decision is less about comparing two known prices and more about your need for a console now.

- Wait if you do not need a console yet and would rather see Sony’s eventual announcement before committing. The trade-off is that the PS6’s price and timing remain unknown.
For now, treat any specific PS6 price—including $1,000—as unconfirmed until Sony announces one.
