What the December 2024 trailer revealed
The December 5, 2024 announcement presented Prologue as a single-player open-world survival game built around emergent play. At the time, PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions planned a Steam release in Q2 2025. That was an announcement-era target, not the date the game ultimately arrived.
The trailer also introduced Preface: Undiscovered World, a free technology demo intended to showcase the studio’s in-house Melba engine. Brendan Greene was identified as the studio’s founder, but the announcement does not provide a substantiated direct quote from him.
What Prologue became—and when it arrived
The finished project is titled Prologue: Go Wayback!. Steam lists PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions as developer and publisher, records its Early Access date as November 20, 2025, and gives June 17, 2026 as its release date. Steam currently lists it as free to play.

How a run works
Each run begins with a newly generated wilderness map. The objective is to navigate toward a Weather Tower while contending with the elements and keeping track of temperature, thirst, and hunger. Players must find food and drinkable water along the way.
The official description emphasizes navigation with a map and compass rather than following quest markers or a minimap. The studio says each generated map covers 64 km², and describes its system as capable of producing “billions” of natural worlds. Those figures are claims from the developer’s Steam product description, not independently measured results.
How the studio describes world generation
In its Steam technical disclosure, PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions says an in-house machine-learning model trained on publicly available open-source data generates base terrain maps in Unreal Engine 5. The developers say the model was vetted to prevent the use of copyrighted material. Procedural systems then add custom-made elements such as trees, rivers, rocks, and hills. According to the studio, generation happens offline on the player’s PC.
This account describes the developer’s stated process; it is not an independent technical audit. The original trailer’s “emergent” framing and the later product description’s focus on generated terrain point to a game centered on navigating changing wilderness rather than following a fixed quest-marker route.

Development has halted
On June 17, 2026, PLAYERUNKNOWN Productions announced that it had halted work on Go Wayback! and released a final update. The studio said it had to make difficult decisions about its future. It also said it would continue at a smaller size, focusing on its Melba technology and pointing players to Preface: Undiscovered World.
The studio’s broader project pages describe Preface as a technology demo and Project Artemis as a longer-term ambition to develop technology for large online worlds where communities can build, play, and create experiences. Artemis is presented as a goal, not as a commercial game with an announced release date.
