To repeatedly evolve Eevee into Espeon or Umbreon in Pokémon GO, make that Eevee your Buddy, walk it 10 km, keep it as your Buddy, then evolve it during the matching in-game period. Evolve during daytime for Espeon or nighttime for Umbreon. The evolution costs 25 Eevee Candy. Before confirming, check that the Evolve button shows the form you want.
Repeatable method: walk Eevee as your Buddy
- Choose the Eevee you want to evolve. Set that specific Eevee as your Buddy.
- Walk it until the game credits 10 km. The distance must be credited to the Eevee you plan to evolve.
- Keep that Eevee as your Buddy. Do not switch Buddies before evolving.
- Check the Evolve button. It should show Espeon or Umbreon, not an uncertain evolution.
- Evolve at the matching in-game time. Choose daytime for Espeon or nighttime for Umbreon, and spend 25 Eevee Candy.
If the button does not show the intended form, do not confirm the evolution. Recheck the Buddy, credited distance and in-game day or night state.
Which method should you use?

How the nickname trick works
Rename Eevee Sakura to get Espeon or Tamao to get Umbreon. These shortcuts are each limited to one use per player. If you have already used the shortcut for the form you want, use the Buddy-walking method instead. Current guides describe the repeatable Buddy route and the one-use nickname shortcuts in their Eevee evolution guide; Bulbapedia’s community-edited Eevee (GO) entry also documents the requirements.
If the intended evolution does not appear
- The button shows a different evolution: Check that the same Eevee earned the 10 km and is still your active Buddy. Also check the game’s day or night state; do not rely on an exact hour from an unofficial guide.
- The nickname did not work: That shortcut may already have been used for that form. Use the Buddy route for another attempt.
- The candy or task display differs: Follow the live in-game requirements and check for an event-specific change. Niantic’s evolution help page explains that candy needs and species-specific task details appear in the game.
Check for event-specific requirements
Pokémon GO events can temporarily change evolution requirements, so check the current event announcement if the game’s display differs from the standard route. Niantic’s 2026 Precious Pals notice changed Sylveon’s temporary requirement; it does not establish an Espeon or Umbreon exception. Read Niantic’s Precious Pals announcement for that event’s details.
