Some players have criticized how familiar Pokémon moves and abilities work in Pokémon Legends: Z-A’s real-time battles, with Substitute and Aegislash among the examples reported by GamesRadar+. That is evidence of specific complaints, not proof that the fanbase as a whole is unimpressed. “Version changes” can also mean game updates or the differences between the Nintendo Switch and Switch 2 editions; those are separate issues.
What players have criticized about the battles
Pokémon Legends: Z-A sets its story in Lumiose City during an urban redevelopment plan and introduces a new way of battling alongside Mega Evolution, according to the official Pokémon site. A real-time battle system can change how familiar mechanics feel in practice: timing, positioning and the flow of an encounter matter in ways that may differ from turn-based expectations.
Substitute
GamesRadar+ reported a Reddit player asking “what is the purpose” of Substitute in the new game. That question captures one player’s reaction, not a measured verdict on the move or a representative sample of players. The complaint points to a broader expectation gap: a familiar move may not seem as useful when battles unfold in real time.
Aegislash
GamesRadar+ also described player criticism of Aegislash’s form-change animations. The reported concern is about how the familiar mechanic is presented in the new battle format; the available reporting does not establish how many players share it or how the criticism affects the game’s overall reception.

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
“Version changes” can mean patches or platform editions
There are two distinct questions behind the phrase. A software update changes the game for players on a given platform; the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2 editions are platform editions with different feature and performance contexts. Neither should be confused with criticism of a move or Pokémon mechanic.
Recent software updates
Nintendo’s update history lists Ver. 2.0.1 as released January 21, 2026. Its notes include quality-of-life changes and fixes: players can purchase multiple Berries at once, the Mega Shard carry limit rises from 999 to 9,999, and issues affecting Mega Dimension content were addressed. These are documented patch changes, not evidence of dissatisfaction with the battle system.

Ver. 2.0.0 was released December 9, 2025, alongside the availability of the additional Mega Dimension story content for purchasers of the separately sold DLC. Nintendo says players must complete the main story before progressing through that DLC’s story. The full notes and version history are on Nintendo Support.
Switch versus Switch 2
A Switch 2 comparison is a platform choice, not a patch-version change. In launch-day coverage published October 16, 2025, TechRadar’s writer described smoother animations and a more stable, crisp presentation in an initial comparison. That is a dated editorial observation, not an official specification or controlled benchmark; it should not be treated as a guarantee of performance in every situation.

What to check before playing online or buying DLC
- Nintendo says everyone playing together must use the same software version, and the update must be installed to use internet features.
- On Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo says the Switch 2 Edition update is required to use its added features or content.
- Nintendo Switch Online membership is required for online features.
- Mega Dimension is separately sold. Its story requires completion of the main story.
These requirements and access conditions are distinct from whether players like a particular move’s role or animation. Check Nintendo’s update and compatibility notes for the official details.
A bundle is announced, not yet released
The official Pokémon site announced on September 30, 2026 that a bundle containing Pokémon Legends: Z-A – Nintendo Switch 2 Edition and Mega Dimension is scheduled for October 29, 2026. That release date is still in the future as of October 8, 2026, so the bundle should not be described as already available. Meristation reported that the Spanish physical bundle puts the game and DLC on the game card; that format detail applies to Spain and should not be generalized to other markets. How much does the criticism tell us?
The available reports establish that some players objected to specific adaptations of familiar mechanics, especially Substitute’s usefulness and Aegislash’s form-change animations. They do not establish what proportion of players agree, nor do they provide a representative measure of fan sentiment. It is more accurate to describe these as reported complaints about particular design choices than to conclude that fans broadly reject the game’s changes.
