A red light on a PS4 controller does not, by itself, mean the controller is broken. Sony says the light-bar color can reflect player order: the first connected controller is blue, while later controllers can glow red, green, or pink. Check what the controller is doing—whether the light is steady or flashing, whether it pairs, and whether it charges—before replacing anything.
1. Identify the symptom before treating the color
Note whether the light is steady, pulsing, or flashing, then check whether the controller responds to buttons, works wirelessly, connects to the console over USB, and shows a charging indicator. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 manual explains that light-bar color can depend on connection and player order; red can be an assigned color, not a fault code. The color alone does not establish overheating, low battery, or a failed component. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 support guidance describes the controller’s light behavior.
2. Reset the controller
- Turn off and unplug the PS4.
- Disconnect the controller from its USB cable.
- Find the small recessed reset button on the back of the controller. Press and hold it with a paper clip or similar object for at least five seconds.
- Connect the controller to a PS4 USB port, then press the PS button to reconnect it.
Sony lists this reset and reconnection procedure as a troubleshooting step. Follow Sony’s reset instructions if you need help locating the button.
3. Test USB pairing with a known-good cable
Pairing requires connecting the controller to the console by USB and pressing PS. Try a cable you know works; if you use a replacement, choose one that supports data as well as charging. A cable that supplies power but cannot transfer data may not let the console pair with the controller. Sony specifies USB connection for pairing but does not require a particular cable brand. Sony’s pairing guidance has the connection steps.

4. Charge from the PS4 and check the battery indicator
Connect the controller to the PS4 while the console is on or in rest mode. Hold the PS button to check the battery status; Sony says the battery icon blinks while charging. A DUALSHOCK 4 with no remaining charge takes about two hours to charge, according to Sony’s support guidance. See Sony’s charging instructions.
5. Consider battery age and charging conditions
A battery’s usable duration declines with repeated use and age, so an older controller that no longer holds charge may need a battery check—but a red light alone is not evidence of battery failure. Sony recommends charging the controller fully at least once a year if it has gone unused for an extended period. The DUALSHOCK 4 instruction manual recommends charging at 10–30 °C (50–86 °F); charging may be less effective outside that range. These are relevant checks when charging or runtime is the problem, not explanations for every red light. Sony’s DUALSHOCK 4 instruction manual covers battery care and operating conditions.

6. Escalate only after reset and cable checks
If the controller still will not charge or connect after resetting it and testing a known-good data cable, possible repair areas include the battery, charging port or assembly, or internal board.
