Its premise is to connect phases in the lunar cycle to earn points while testing your knowledge of how the Moon changes over the month. It remains an archived Doodle, not a newly launched 2026 game.
What is Rise of the Half Moon?
Google’s Doodle archive entry describes Rise of the Half Moon as a monthly recurring card game: players connect lunar phases, score points, and play against the October Half Moon. That makes it more than an illustrated astronomy explainer; the Moon-cycle theme is built into the game’s card-play premise.
Google’s description establishes the broad objective, but not the full rulebook. It does not detail the turn sequence, deck composition, scoring formula, wildcard rules, or difficulty curve. Those specifics should not be assumed from the short official description.
How the Moon-phase theme works
The game’s title uses “half moon,” the familiar everyday term for a quarter moon. Google explains that only a quarter of the Moon is illuminated at this phase, though it can look as if half of the visible disk is present.

Can you play it as a physical card game?
Google’s archive shows a first paper prototype made from playing cards, evidence that physical cards were part of the design process—not evidence that Google sells an official boxed edition. Community discussion includes fan-made tabletop adaptations, but does not establish an official physical release or a currently available retail product.
