The 2024 Xbox Series X refresh changed the console’s look, storage options and disc-drive configuration—not the performance Xbox said to expect. The white 1TB Digital Edition is all-digital, while the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition paired twice the stated storage with a distinctive finish and matching controller. Xbox announced in June 2026 that it would sunset its 2TB model, so its availability now depends on current regional and retailer listings.
What’s different about the new Xbox Series X?
Xbox announced two Series X variants in June 2024: a white 1TB Digital Edition and a 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition. The changes are practical and cosmetic: the white model has no disc drive, while the Galaxy Black model adds storage and a special finish. Xbox said the variants retained Series X speed and performance.
| Model | Disc support | Storage | Design and included controller | Announced US price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Xbox Series X – 1TB Digital Edition | All-digital; no physical-disc support | 1TB SSD | Robot White | $449.99 US estimated retail price at its 2024 announcement |
| Xbox Series X – 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition | Xbox’s announcement did not state a disc-drive change for this model | 2TB SSD | Celestial black finish with silver, grey and green details; matching controller included | $599.99 US estimated retail price at its 2024 announcement |
These are historical announcement prices, not current checkout prices. Xbox said the new options would be available in select markets. Xbox’s June 9, 2024 announcement gives the original model details and pricing.
Does the white Xbox Series X have a disc drive?
No. Xbox explicitly described the 1TB Robot White Digital Edition as all-digital. It is not the right choice if you need to play physical game discs. The Galaxy Black model’s announcement does not say that its disc-drive configuration changed, so don’t assume it shares the white model’s all-digital design.

Is the new Xbox Series X more powerful?
Xbox did not present the 2024 refresh as a performance upgrade. In its June 2024 announcement, Xbox Devices head Roanne Sones said the new options would offer “the same speed and performance” with more design, storage and price choices. Xbox also said the Galaxy Black edition had the same speed, performance and features as Series X, alongside twice the storage and a unique design.
The original Series X technical overview lists an 8-core custom Zen 2 CPU, a custom RDNA 2 GPU rated at 12 TFLOPS, 16GB of GDDR6 memory, a custom 1TB NVMe SSD and a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Those are published specifications for the original platform, not a new benchmark or a claim that every game runs at a particular resolution or frame rate. Xbox describes the Digital Edition as capable of up to 4K resolution; actual resolution and frame rate depend on the game and display. Its original platform targets were 4K at 60 FPS, with support up to 120 FPS. See Xbox’s March 2020 technical overview for that platform context.

What’s the difference between the 1TB and 2TB Xbox Series X?
The clearest functional distinction is storage capacity: the Galaxy Black edition’s stated 2TB SSD is double the Digital Edition’s 1TB SSD. The white model is explicitly all-digital; the black model adds a special design and comes with a matching controller. Xbox described both as retaining Series X performance, so the capacity and design differences—not a stated speed boost—are the reason to distinguish them.
Is the 2TB Galaxy Black Xbox Series X still available?
Availability is now a retailer- and region-specific question. On June 25, 2026, Team Xbox announced that it would sunset its 2TB model. That announcement does not establish whether any particular store still has stock. Check current listings in your market before making a purchase decision; the 2024 US estimated retail price should not be treated as a current price.

The same 2026 announcement said console price changes would take effect August 1, 2026: US$100 increases for 512GB models and US$150 increases for 1TB models. Those announced changes do not establish the live price of a particular Series X listing or the price in another region. Details are in Team Xbox’s June 25, 2026 price update.

In January 2025, Xbox said its repairability program was expanding to the three new Series X|S variants. It named participating uBreakiFix by Asurion locations in the United States as an authorized in-person repair option and said replacement components were available through Microsoft Store, with console parts also available through Microsoft’s Repair Hub on iFixit. Participation and model compatibility can vary, so confirm them with the local store or service listing. Xbox’s announcement is at Introducing More Ways for Players to Repair their Xbox Consoles.
