Some PS5 owners have reported inaccurate playtime totals for years, and a June 2026 PSN disruption was followed by reports of missing games and hours in some profiles. Sony describes the feature but does not explain how its per-game counter is calculated. Treat the displayed hours as an estimate, not a precise record.
What Sony says PS5 playtime measures
Sony’s official PS5 feature page lists “Total hours played on PS5” and defines it as: “All the hours you’ve spent in-game, either on your PS5 console or PlayStation Portal remote player.” That describes the platform statistic, but Sony does not explain the per-game counter’s calculation, how it syncs, whether idle time counts, or what accuracy to expect.
What “inaccurate” can look like
Reports predating the 2026 disruption describe undercounts and overcounts, delayed updates, sudden changes, missing titles, and differences between console generations or between Sony’s display and a game’s own timer. These are reported symptoms, not a measured failure rate; no reliable figure establishes how many players are affected. The display may also differ depending on where and when it is checked.
- Where: Compare the home-screen game tile, the profile’s Games tab, the PlayStation App, and any third-party dashboard.
- Which version: Note whether the title is the PS5 version or a PS4 game played on PS5, and whether it is a disc or digital copy.
- When: Record whether you checked immediately after playing or allowed time for a possible sync delay. A difference between these readings does not establish which is independently authoritative.
What happened during the June–July 2026 PSN disruption
June 2026 reporting described unpurchased games appearing in some profiles and “Recently Played,” followed by reports of recent games, hours, or activity going missing. July reporting said some disc and digital players were affected. Later player accounts were mixed: some said their hours and games returned, while others said entries remained missing or disappeared again. Those accounts show inconsistent reported restoration; they do not establish that data was permanently lost or that the issue affected every account.

A July report focused on physical-disc games whose playtime had disappeared. Its reporter said they could not reproduce the issue. Some users said deleting and reinstalling a game helped, and some claimed Support knew about the problem, but these were unverified user reports—not official guidance or a dependable fix. As of October 8, 2026, the available evidence does not establish that Sony confirmed a complete resolution across accounts. The PlayStation Network status page does not show a specific playtime-history status.
What to do if your hours or games are missing
There is no confirmed console-side procedure identified for recalculating or restoring Sony’s server-recorded playtime. These checks may help you describe the discrepancy, but they are not a Sony-confirmed repair method:

Independent analysis has suggested database rebuilding, trophy syncing, or replaying a game might prompt an update in some cases, but these are not reliable fixes. Reinstalling a physical game is also only an anecdotal suggestion. Do not count on any of them to restore account-side records.

PS Playtime says it reads Sony’s records and is not affiliated with Sony. It may help you inspect or sort recorded hours, but it cannot independently verify or repair an inaccurate or missing Sony record. The service says game history must be publicly visible for it to read it.
