The figure counted redemptions—not one million people playing at once or one million paid sales—and the warning described a possibility, not a queue every player was certain to encounter.
What GGG announced on December 6, 2024
Shortly before launch, Grinding Gear Games (GGG) announced: “We’ve just reached 1 million Early Access redemptions.” The studio added: “However we want to be upfront with you all and let you know there may very well be queues over the weekend.” GGG’s announcement framed queues as a possibility during the opening weekend, not a certainty for every player.
What the one-million figure does—and does not—mean
“Redemptions” is the metric GGG announced. It should not be treated as a count of simultaneous players or as a total of paid purchases. Those are different measures, and the announcement did not say the redemption total represented either one.
The distinction matters because a large number of people who have redeemed access does not establish how many will try to connect at the same time. GGG’s separate discussion of potential online activity concerned capacity planning; it did not redefine the redemption count.

Why the studio anticipated queues
In launch remarks, game director Jonathan Rogers said the scale was beyond what the studio had expected and described uncertainty about how backend services would perform as activity increased. He said: “We really didn’t expect to have more than one million people online at the same time.” His comment expressed concern about possible concurrency; it is not evidence that one million players were actually online simultaneously. Rogers’s launch explanation also outlined the steps GGG said it was taking to prepare.
What GGG said it was doing to prepare
Rogers said GGG had ordered more cloud capacity, was adding database shards, and was scaling systems. These were measures the studio said it was taking at the time. They do not, by themselves, establish how well the game’s services performed during launch or how long players waited.

Does the 2024 warning describe queue status now?
No. The warning concerned the launch weekend in December 2024. It cannot establish current queue status or wait times. The announcement and Rogers’s remarks document what GGG anticipated and planned then, not how servers are performing on October 8, 2026.
