Path of Exile 2’s Early Access launch on December 6, 2024, was disrupted by several separate access and database problems—not one universal login failure. Grinding Gear Games said last-minute database upgrades could delay servers going live, later identified duplicate character IDs after adding database shards, and reported a separate Steam purchase-and-login issue. Those are historical launch updates; they do not establish the cause of a login error today or current service status.
What happened during Path of Exile 2’s launch?
Grinding Gear Games (GGG) used an official launch thread to post updates across December 6–8, 2024. Before access began, the developer said it was making last-minute database upgrades to handle expected demand and warned that the work might delay servers going live. The game’s Early Access launch date was December 6, 2024, according to the Steam listing.
The thread then described a series of problems as the team worked to bring services online. GGG reported deploying a new database configuration and fixing a last-minute crash. It later said that adding database shards at the last minute to support the large number of players had caused multiple characters to receive the same character ID. The developer said it had found the issue and was working on a fix.
GGG also described a recurring symptom with a different underlying problem: it said database restarts and wipes were needed to prevent databases from entering bad or corrupted states. The developer’s updates therefore point to multiple launch-era service and database issues, rather than a single cause for every player who could not log in. Which login problems did GGG identify separately?
Database and character-ID problems
GGG attributed the duplicate-character-ID issue to its last-minute addition of database shards. Separately, it said repeated database trouble required restarts and wipes to avoid bad or corrupted states. The thread does not establish that either issue explains every launch-day message such as “Unable to connect to Login Server” or “I cannot login”; those phrases describe player symptoms, not a diagnosis for an individual account.
Steam purchase and login issue
At 6:28 p.m. Eastern on December 6, GGG said it expected a fix soon for Steam purchasers who could not log in. At 6:37 p.m. Eastern, it reported that the issue was resolved and that the purchase queue should process in about 15 minutes. These were time-specific reports about the launch-day Steam issue, not a promise about current Steam purchases or account access.

Reports on December 8
In a separate update on December 8, GGG said it was investigating reports from some players who could not log in to their characters. That later investigation should not be conflated with the specific December 6 database-shard and Steam updates.

The 2024 launch thread is not a live status report and cannot tell you whether a new login failure is widespread or account-specific. First check current official status or known-issue information, then use the support route that matches the problem. The official support page lists technical support, known issues, gameplay help, bug reports, and account-management options.

- Check whether the problem is widespread. Look for a current official service notice or known-issue report. The launch thread documents what happened in December 2024, not what is happening now.
- If it appears account-specific, contact account support. Use the account-management or technical-support route on GGG’s support page and describe the exact error and when it occurs.
- Include a support code if you can generate one. The support page says to use
/verifyin game to generate a code that can expedite a support request. If you cannot generate a code, follow the alternate contact route listed on that page.
