Rare Replay is worth playing if you want a varied archive of Rare games and enjoy exploring how the studio’s work changed across eras. Its 30-game lineup, Snapshot challenges and archival extras make it more than a bare stack of old releases, but the games themselves vary in appeal, and the collection preserves older versions rather than remaking them. It is available for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S; the digital edition also has a GoldenEye 007 download offer for eligible owners.
What is Rare Replay?
Rare Replay is a collection released on August 4, 2015, for Rare’s 30th anniversary. The Xbox Store lists Rare as developer and Microsoft Studios as publisher, and currently identifies Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S as supported platforms. The Xbox Store listing is for New Zealand, so its regional storefront details should not be assumed to apply elsewhere.

Xbox Wire introduced the package as a 30-game retrospective spanning Rare’s early 2D work through its Xbox 360-era releases. Rather than rebuilding every game, the collection presents the original titles alongside shared interface features and bonus material. That distinction matters: the appeal is access to a varied slice of the studio’s history, not a consistent modernized treatment of every game.
What games and extras do you get?
The collection’s Game Gallery lets you browse its 30 titles. The official manual also describes a Snapshot Gallery, Rare Revealed features, digital versions of classic manuals, and documentaries. Collection-level additions include achievements and options for saves and visuals, plus challenges and other Xbox Live functionality. These are enhancements around the games; they do not mean every title has been remade or redesigned.
#1 Best Overall
- Celebrate Rare’s 30th Anniversary with a jaw-dropping collection of 30 iconic games, lovingly presented for Xbox One.
- Enjoy over 60 minutes of behind-the-scenes interviews and footage
- 10,000 Gamerscore points available and 700plus hours of gameplay.
- Tackle snapshot challenges and enjoy exclusive bonus features.
Rare and Xbox Wire advertised over 10,000 Gamerscore, 700 hours of gameplay, and more than 60 minutes of interviews and footage. Those are publisher estimates and promotional figures, not independently measured playtime guarantees. The documentary material and challenges may be a meaningful part of the package for players interested in the studio’s history, while others may mainly want to play a handful of familiar games.
The official manual sums up the package as a chance to experience the games together, use Xbox One features such as achievements, and explore bonus features and documentaries. The Rare Replay Game Help manual also explains the physical-disc installation process.

Is Rare Replay good? What reviewers say
Paul Acevedo’s review for Windows Central praises the collection’s variety across eras, presentation, Snapshot challenges, and documentary videos. The review also notes omissions and differences between versions, which can matter if you are choosing the collection for one particular title rather than for the archive as a whole.
Jord Tury’s Gaming.net review, updated April 2, 2026, describes the appeal as uneven: some games may stir nostalgia, while others can feel slight or dated. Tury also points to borders around some older games and the lack of an in-game 16:9 option as drawbacks. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not a technical test of every title or display setup.

- 10,000 Gamerscore points available and 700+ hours of gameplay.
- Tackle snapshot challenges and enjoy exclusive bonus features.
Taken together, the reviews suggest a collection best approached as a sampler rather than a promise that all 30 games will suit every player. Its variety is a strength if you enjoy trying different genres and eras; uneven quality and older design are more noticeable if you expect a uniformly polished set of modern-feeling games.
Can you play Rare Replay on Xbox Series X|S?
Yes. The current Xbox Store listing names Xbox Series X|S as supported, as well as Xbox One. The collection began as an Xbox One release, announced in 2015 as an Xbox One exclusive. For the current platform listing and digital purchase route, check the Xbox Store page for your region.

Digital edition and GoldenEye 007
Rare’s current page says owners of the digital version of Rare Replay can download GoldenEye 007. The page dates this update to January 2023 and specifies digital owners, so it should not be read as a confirmed offer for disc owners. Rare’s Rare Replay page has the publisher’s statement.
Physical disc installation
The manual’s instructions are specifically for the Xbox One disc edition: insert the disc into the console to install, and keep the disc in the tray to play titles installed from it. The digital Store listing is a separate way to get the collection; do not assume disc installation instructions describe that route.

How to decide whether it suits you
- You are likely to enjoy it if you are interested in Rare’s franchises or history, like sampling games from different periods, and value documentary extras, challenges, and achievements.
- You may be less satisfied if you want every included game to feel current, expect one specific title or version that is not included, or are bothered by older presentation choices such as borders or a lack of widescreen options noted by reviewers.
- Check your preferred access route before buying: the Store lists the digital edition for Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S, while the manual confirms the Xbox One disc installation route and its disc requirement for play.
The collection also makes more sense as a broad retrospective than as a guarantee of a particular number of hours. Rare’s 700-hour figure was a 2015 publisher estimate; actual time depends on which games and challenges you choose to play.
