That comparison needs context: Z-A’s score changes by platform and review sample, and the gap is not proof that one specific design choice caused critics to rate it lower.
What the review scores actually show
Metacritic displayed Pokémon Legends: Z-A at 78/100 from 107 critic reviews on its all-platform page when retrieved October 8, 2026. The same page listed Pokémon Legends: Arceus at 83/100 among related games, making the displayed difference five points. Metacritic classified Z-A’s 78 as “Generally Favorable.” Metacritic’s Z-A page and its Arceus page are snapshots; scores and review totals can change.
Z-A’s score depends on platform
Metacritic’s Z-A page showed separate platform figures. These are not interchangeable with the all-platform figure, and they come from different review samples.
| Metacritic listing | Score | Critic reviews shown |
|---|---|---|
| Z-A, all platforms | 78/100 | 107 |
| Z-A, Nintendo Switch | 70/100 | 9 |
| Z-A, Nintendo Switch 2 | 78/100 | 112 |
| Arceus, related-games listing | 83/100 | Not stated on that listing |
The figures above were displayed on Metacritic when retrieved October 8, 2026. The page’s all-platform total and its platform breakdown do not match, so they should be reported as the page presented them—not added together or treated as matched samples. The visible Arceus score alone also does not establish a platform-for-platform comparison.

Critic scores are not user scores
Metacritic displayed a 4.8/10 user score for Z-A from 4,076 user ratings on the same retrieval date. That rating reflects users who submitted scores, not professional critics, and it should not be combined with or substituted for the 78 Metascore.
Why the two games feel different
Arceus puts more weight on collecting and exploration
Pokémon Legends: Arceus is more collection- and Pokédex-oriented. Its structure takes players through wilderness areas, with exploration and catching central to the experience. GamesRadar characterized Arceus as leaning more toward the “collectathon” aspect of Pokémon. GamesRadar’s review

- Your journey will take you to all manner of sights in the streets arrayed around Prism Tower, including shops, restaurants, and places called wild zones—where Pokémon roam free.
- As you catch, train, and battle Pokémon, there will be plenty of people to meet too—like AZ, the enigmatic owner of Hotel Z.
Z-A makes battles the center of the action
Z-A shifts toward real-time battles and a more battle-centric rhythm. The official Pokémon site highlights Mega Evolution and a new battle system, while GamesRadar described the combat as substantially overhauled. For players who wanted Arceus’s balance of catching, discovery and wilderness, this focus can feel like a narrower kind of adventure; for players who want more active battles, it is a deliberate change rather than a simple downgrade. Lumiose City trades open landscapes for a single urban setting
Z-A takes place in Lumiose City during an urban redevelopment project, according to the official site. That gives the game a distinctive city-based identity, but it also means the setting does not offer the same succession of broad wilderness areas as Arceus. GamesRadar praised the sense of inhabiting the Pokémon world, while TechRadar argued in its review that Lumiose was not varied enough to carry the whole game. That is a critic’s judgment about the setting, not a measured fact about every player’s experience. TechRadar’s review

What reviewers praised and criticized
The reviews point to trade-offs, not a single agreed explanation for the five-point Metacritic difference.
- Combat: GamesRadar praised the real-time combat and the feeling of inhabiting the Pokémon world.
- Repetition and challenge: TechRadar criticized repetition and limited challenge, and raised concerns about battle bugs.
- World variety: TechRadar’s review found Lumiose City insufficiently varied to sustain the whole game.
Those are individual publication-level assessments. Neither the score comparison nor these reviews establish that a particular feature caused the aggregate gap. They do help explain why reactions can diverge: the new battle focus may be a strength for one player and a loss of the exploration-and-collection balance another valued in Arceus.
