No 2025 release date for a native Red Dead Redemption 2 edition on PS5 or Xbox Series X|S was confirmed by Rockstar in the sources reviewed. The date appeared in rumor coverage: on October 6, 2025, GameSpot reported that leaker NateTheHate2 claimed versions for those consoles—and Switch 2—existed, but had no release-timing update. Rockstar’s 2025 current-generation announcement was for the original Red Dead Redemption, not RDR2.
What the 2025 Red Dead Redemption 2 rumor actually said
On October 5, 2025, leaker NateTheHate2 wrote: “Yes, they exist. I have no update on timing for release.” Push Square reproduced the statement in its October 6 report, and GameSpot reported the claim the same day. The claim concerned versions of Red Dead Redemption 2 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2; it did not give a launch date or confirm a 2025 release.
That was an unofficial claim, not a Rockstar announcement. The reporting establishes what the leaker said, not whether the versions would ship or when. Rockstar’s 2020 statement that the PS4 and Xbox One releases would work on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility is separate: it confirms playability of those existing editions, not a native current-generation RDR2 release.
What you can play on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S now
The existing PS4 and Xbox One editions of RDR2 are playable on the corresponding newer consoles through backward compatibility. That means you can play the prior-generation game on current hardware; it should not be described as a native PS5 or Xbox Series edition. Rockstar’s compatibility statement does not specify RDR2’s frame rate or resolution on those consoles, so the available evidence does not support a performance claim.

If you buy a physical copy to play on PS5, it is the PS4 edition. Its ability to run on PS5 comes from backward compatibility, not from an announced native PS5 version.
What Rockstar announced in 2025—and what it did not
Rockstar announced that the original Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare were coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch 2, and mobile in December 2025. For the PS5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of that original game, Rockstar described 60 fps, enhanced image quality, HDR, and resolutions up to 4K. Those specifications apply to the original Red Dead Redemption, not Red Dead Redemption 2.

Take-Two’s fiscal third-quarter 2026 release information lists Red Dead Redemption and Undead Nightmare for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 with a December 2, 2025 release date. GameSpot’s RDR2 listing, by contrast, names PC, PS4, and Xbox One. A release list is not proof that an unlisted project cannot exist, but these listings do not establish a current-generation RDR2 edition or release date.

| Choice | What is established | Release certainty |
|---|---|---|
| Play the existing edition | PS4 and Xbox One versions are playable on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S through backward compatibility. | Compatibility is confirmed by Rockstar; the edition remains the prior-generation release. |
| Wait for a rumored current-generation edition | A leaker said PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2 versions existed. | No timing update was given in the October 5, 2025 statement, and the claim was not a Rockstar confirmation. |
If you want to play now, the confirmed route is the existing PS4 or Xbox One edition on compatible hardware. If you are holding out specifically for a native current-generation release, the cited rumor does not provide a date to plan around.
