Pokémon GO’s Trainer level cap is now 80, not 50. Under the progression update that took effect on October 15, 2025, level 50 is an intermediate milestone requiring 12,753,000 cumulative XP. The old level 41–50 Level-Up Research tasks were removed, so legacy level-50 checklists no longer describe current requirements.
What level 50 means in Pokémon GO now
Niantic raised the Trainer level cap from 50 to 80 and rebalanced progression in its October 15, 2025 update. The updated curve lists 12,753,000 total XP at level 50. That is your cumulative XP milestone, not the amount you must earn just to move from level 49 to level 50. Niantic’s announcement states: “The Trainer level cap will increase from level 50 to level 80.”

These are selected milestones in Niantic’s rebalanced progression table, not a complete level-by-level XP chart.
Are there still level 50 requirements or research tasks?
No former level 41–50 Level-Up Research task is a current requirement. The 2025 update removed those tasks; Niantic’s wording is: “Tasks for Level-Up Research for levels 41 to 50 will be removed.” Current Level-Up Research tasks apply to levels 71–80. Because account-specific tasks can vary by level and status, check your own profile rather than relying on a checklist written for the previous system.

How to check your level and progress
- Open Pokémon GO and tap your Trainer avatar to open the Trainer Profile.
- Check the level and progress shown on the profile to see your current status.
- Look for the Level-Up Research area if tasks are displayed for your progression.
The profile is the relevant in-game place to confirm your own progress and any tasks currently shown. Niantic’s Trainer Levels help page describes how levels and XP progression work.
How to earn XP on the way to level 50
XP comes from ordinary gameplay. Niantic identifies catching Pokémon, visiting PokéStops, and battling as XP-earning activities. XP requirements increase at higher Trainer levels, but Niantic’s help page does not rank these activities by speed, so there is no supported basis here for calling one the fastest method.

- Battle.
Track your progress in the Trainer Profile and use the cumulative milestone of 12,753,000 XP as the level-50 target in the current curve.

When level 50 was introduced in 2020, Niantic described Level-Up Research challenges for levels 41–50. Historical examples for level 50 included making Excellent Throws, catching Legendary Pokémon, and defeating Team GO Rocket Leaders with Pokémon under 1,500 CP. Those examples are not current requirements: the tasks for levels 41–50 were removed in the 2025 update. The original 2020 level-cap announcement is useful for understanding the old system, not for planning a current level-up.
