Take-Two uses the term “sold-in.” Its reporting does not establish that this is a direct count of copies purchased by players, so it is more precise to describe the figure as units sold-in rather than consumer sell-through.
Why do some reports say more than 50 million?
That number comes from an earlier company milestone. In its fiscal third-quarter 2023 results, Take-Two said: “To date, the title has sold-in more than 50 million units.” It was accurate when reported, but it has since been surpassed by the company’s later over-87-million figure. How does the game’s total compare with the Red Dead series?
Take-Two’s 2026 presentation puts the Red Dead series at nearly 116 million units sold-in worldwide. That is a franchise-wide figure; it should not be mistaken for Red Dead Redemption 2’s individual total of over 87 million.
What does the US sales ranking mean?
Take-Two says Red Dead Redemption 2 was the #3 best-selling title in the US over the past eight years by both unit and dollar sales. The company attributes the ranking to Circana retail tracking for video-game software from January 2018 through December 2025. This is a US retail ranking over a defined period—not a worldwide all-time ranking.

What is included with the game?
Take-Two says Red Dead Online is free with every copy of Red Dead Redemption 2. The company also notes that Red Dead Online was released as a standalone product in December 2020. The bundled online mode and the separate standalone release are distinct ways to access Red Dead Online.
