Why Nvidia’s DLSS 5 Starfield Demo Was Mocked for a “Giga-Nostril”

Nvidia’s Starfield DLSS 5 comparison sparked the “giga-nostril” joke. The nickname captures viewers’ reaction, not a confirmed rendering diagnosis or final game result.

The “giga-nostril” is a viewer-given nickname for a dark area around a character’s nose in Nvidia’s Starfield DLSS 5 demonstration—not a confirmed technical diagnosis or proof that the system generated a nostril. Nvidia published the before-and-after image as part of its March 16, 2026 announcement; the argument that followed was about how the new rendering effect appears to change faces and whether developers can preserve a game’s intended art direction.

What is the Starfield “giga-nostril”?

It is a joke about the apparent result in one of Nvidia’s official Starfield before-and-after examples. After Nvidia showed the image, viewers pointed to a conspicuous dark area around a character’s nose and dubbed it a “giga-nostril.” Futurism reported the nickname and noted that Nvidia itself had shown the image. The label describes how some viewers read the picture; it does not establish that DLSS 5 literally created an oversized nostril or explain what caused the shadow. Futurism’s report

“AI yassification” is likewise a critical, humorous framing—not Nvidia’s name for a feature. The image was part of a technology demonstration, not an unrelated fan edit, but it should not be treated as proof of how a finished game will look.

What is Nvidia DLSS 5?

Nvidia describes DLSS 5 as real-time neural rendering. According to the company, its AI model takes a game frame’s color and motion vectors, then adds lighting and materials anchored to the source 3D content. Nvidia says the result is designed to remain consistent from frame to frame, and that developers can control the effect’s intensity, color grading, and masking. Those are Nvidia’s descriptions of the system, not independent findings about the quality of its output. Nvidia’s DLSS 5 announcement

That is more specific than calling it a beauty filter: Nvidia presents the feature as a rendering approach for game scenes. But the technical description does not settle the criticism raised by the Starfield example. Viewers and game-industry commentators objected that the demonstrated faces and scenes looked altered in ways that could conflict with the original art direction. The Associated Press reported on the reaction; WIRED covered criticism from developers and artists.

Does DLSS 5 change Starfield characters’ faces?

The announcement image led viewers to perceive a change in a character’s face, but the available reporting does not establish exactly how the final effect will alter Starfield characters—or whether the published example reflects the finished implementation. Nvidia’s stated purpose is to add lighting and materials, while critics focused on the visible impression that faces and the game’s visual style had changed. Those observations should not be collapsed into a verified technical explanation.

The disagreement is partly about artistic control. Nvidia says developers have detailed controls to help maintain each game’s aesthetic. Bethesda said the footage was an early look and that its art teams would adjust the lighting and final effect. In a response reported by PC Gamer, Bethesda said: “This is a very early look, and our art teams will be further adjusting the lighting and final effect to look the way we think works best for each game. This will all be under our artists’ control, and totally optional for players.” PC Gamer’s report

Bethesda’s statement describes its intended process and player choice; it does not independently verify that a finished version will satisfy critics. The public demonstration and the promise of later adjustment can both be true.

When is DLSS 5 coming to Starfield?

Nvidia announced DLSS 5 on March 16, 2026, listed Starfield among the games planned to support it, and said the technology would arrive in fall 2026. That was a planned release window, not confirmation of a launch date. The cited announcements and reports do not establish whether DLSS 5 has since launched in Starfield, what the final implementation looks like, or what hardware it will require. Nvidia’s announcement

Nvidia also said DLSS was integrated in more than 750 games as of its March 16 announcement. That is the company’s reported count, not an independent audit—and it does not mean those games support DLSS 5 specifically.

Why the demo became a debate about more than one image

The “giga-nostril” joke made a small detail in the comparison easy to share, but the broader concern was whether an AI rendering layer might make a game look more photoreal at the expense of choices its artists made. Nvidia’s CEO Jensen Huang framed DLSS 5 as a way to combine generative AI with hand-crafted rendering while preserving artistic control. Bethesda’s Todd Howard said the company was excited to work with the technology. Critics, by contrast, took the demo as a warning that added realism could alter character design or visual identity.

Those are competing interpretations of a preview, not settled conclusions about the finished feature. Nvidia’s announcement and Bethesda’s response describe intended controls and plans; the images and criticism reflect how the demonstration was received. The consulted sources do not provide an independent controlled test of final DLSS 5 image quality in Starfield.
