How do you unlock the Pit?
Blizzard’s original Season 4 instructions, published in 2024, said to reach World Tier IV, complete a Tier 46 Nightmare Dungeon, collect Runeshards, and activate the Obelisk in Cerrigar. How does a Pit run work?
In the original Season 4 description, a run began at the Obelisk in Cerrigar and gave players a limited time to defeat enough monsters to summon a final boss. The historical timer was 10 minutes. Deaths deducted time: 30 seconds for the first death, 60 seconds for the second, and 90 seconds for each subsequent death. Groups of up to four could enter; the player who spent the Runeshards received the larger share of materials. How clear time affected tier unlocks in Season 4
Blizzard’s original instructions said that finishing with four to six minutes left could unlock one additional tier, while finishing with six or more minutes left could unlock two. The same article described a 200-level maximum for that version. These are Season 4 rules, not a reliable statement of the current unlock system or tier cap.

How many Pit tiers are there?
The official descriptions give different totals because they document different versions: Blizzard’s Season 4 article described 200 levels, while its Patch 2.0 notes described 150 tiers. The latest reviewed patch entry, version 3.2.2 dated September 30, 2026, does not list a Pit change, but that omission does not confirm that every older mechanic remains in place. Paragon Glyph upgrades
Patch 2.0 moved Paragon Glyph upgrades from Nightmare Dungeons into the Pit and tied upgrade attempts to successful clears. Historical Artificer’s Stone bonus rewards

How should you choose a tier?
Choose based on the reward you are pursuing and whether you can clear the tier reliably at a useful pace. A higher tier is not automatically the better choice if its difficulty costs too much time or causes frequent deaths. The available official sources do not establish a current quantitative best tier or a build-by-build comparison.
- For Glyph progression, check the current upgrade interface and prioritize a tier you can clear successfully.
- For crafting materials, inspect the live reward display and compare it with the crafting materials you need.
- If a tier is taking too long or causing repeated deaths, step down and reassess your survivability and clear speed.
