Its choice of turn-based or real-time-with-pause combat makes its battles more flexible, but the steep learning curve and underexplained crusade-management layer can make it a demanding ride. It is a strong fit for players who want a long, systems-rich RPG—not an easy recommendation for someone looking for a short or casual adventure.
What reviewers think of Wrath of the Righteous
The review picture is broadly positive, with a clear split between the game’s ambitious role-playing systems and its less polished elements. Metacritic showed an 83 Metascore from 32 critic reviews and a 7.7 user score from 559 user ratings when accessed on October 8, 2026; these are dated snapshots, not fixed scores. Metacritic’s scores and review excerpts reflect praise for the epic campaign, replayability, and tabletop adaptation alongside criticism of the crusade component and technical faults.
Steam displayed a Very Positive rating, with 81% of 17,810 English reviews positive, and a Mostly Positive rating, with 78% of 267 recent reviews positive, on October 8, 2026. Those platform-specific figures can change as reviews are added. Steam’s listing also hosts an IGN excerpt describing it as an enormous isometric RPG with depth and a strong turn-based option.
PC Gamer reviewer Jody Macgregor summed up the unevenness as “A long game of choose-your-own-chosen-one with high highs to balance the lows.” Macgregor praised improved tutorial support, clearer choices, and the ability to switch combat modes mid-fight, while criticizing the army-management game, some dialogue, and frame-rate drops on the reviewer’s Windows 10 system with an Intel Core i7, 16 GB RAM, and Nvidia GTX 1060. Those performance observations describe that review setup, not every PC configuration. Read PC Gamer’s review.

What kind of RPG is it?
Developed by Owlcat Games, Wrath of the Righteous adapts the Pathfinder tabletop rules and campaign. A demonic rift has opened in the Worldwound, and you build a protagonist, recruit companions, and take part in a crusade against the Abyss. As the campaign advances, your character develops mythic powers. The result is an isometric, single-player role-playing game centered on building a character and making choices across a large fantasy campaign. Steam identifies Owlcat Games as developer and META Publishing as publisher.
Combat, character building, and the learning curve
Two ways to fight
Combat can be played turn-based or in real time with pause. Turn-based play gives you more time to consider each character’s actions; real-time-with-pause lets encounters unfold continuously while you pause to issue commands. PC Gamer notes that you can switch between the modes even during a fight, so you are not locked into one approach for the whole campaign. The flexibility does not remove the rules learning: the game draws on a dense tabletop system, and its many class and build choices ask players to learn how abilities and combat options fit together.

Crusade management is a separate challenge
The campaign adds a crusade-management layer in which you command forces as well as develop your adventuring party. Reviewers identify this army-management side game as less clearly explained than the role-playing and combat systems. If you enjoy strategic layers, it adds another dimension to the campaign; if you mainly want a character-focused adventure, it may feel like friction rather than a bonus.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- A good match: players who want a lengthy fantasy campaign, detailed character development, meaningful choices, and room to replay with different builds or decisions.
- A tougher fit: newcomers who want a gentle introduction to RPG rules, readers who dislike substantial dialogue and system detail, or anyone looking for a short, low-commitment game.
- Consider your patience for: the crusade-management layer and uneven writing, both of which are recurring criticisms in reviews.
It is not necessary to choose between a tactical mode and a faster one before starting: combat supports both, and the modes can be changed during a battle. The central question is whether the depth and scale appeal enough to justify learning a demanding ruleset.

Owlcat announced the Enhanced Edition for PlayStation Store, Xbox Games Store, and Nintendo Switch Cloud Streaming, and said PC owners would receive version 2.0.0 as a free update. That announcement does not establish that every storefront or streaming option is available in every region, so check the local platform store before buying. Owlcat’s platform announcement describes the release.
Steam lists the Enhanced Edition and a Game of the Year Edition bundle containing 12 items, including the Enhanced Edition and DLC. The contents of the edition matter if you want the add-ons; confirm the exact DLC in the store listing for your platform before purchase, since editions and regional listings may differ. Steam prices and review totals are dynamic, so they should not be treated as permanent values.
How to decide whether to buy it
- Choose your platform first. Check the current local listing for PC, PlayStation, Xbox, or Switch Cloud Streaming; access and storefront availability can vary by region.
- Match the combat to your taste. If you like turn-based tactics or real-time-with-pause, the game supports both and lets you switch mid-fight.
- Be honest about rules and reading. Its Pathfinder-based character building and extensive systems reward players willing to learn, but are not designed as a lightweight introduction.
- Check the edition’s DLC list. Steam’s Game of the Year bundle includes 12 items, but verify the contents of the specific platform and regional listing you intend to buy.
- Decide whether the crusade layer sounds appealing. It is a significant part of the package and is less clearly explained than the core role-playing systems, according to reviewers.
The tabletop campaign connection
The video game adapts Pathfinder campaign material, and the tabletop Wrath of the Righteous Adventure Path is a relevant companion for readers who want to explore that source format. It is a separate tabletop product, not an edition of the video game; check the exact Adventure Path edition and retailer listing before buying.
