Quest Viva is a free, open-source tool for making interactive fiction: use its point-and-click editor to build a branching gamebook or a room-and-object text adventure, then add scripting and media as your project grows. Its official introduction says, “You don’t need any programming experience to use it.”

What is Quest Viva?

Quest Viva is software for creating and playing interactive story games, rather than a physical game or a single pre-made title. Its two core formats are gamebooks, where readers choose what happens next, and exploration-based text adventures, where they move through rooms, inspect objects, solve puzzles, and interact with characters. The official homepage describes the project as free and open source.

Quest is also the name used for earlier versions of the project. Quest 5 and Quest Viva are related, but they are not interchangeable labels: Quest Viva is the ongoing cross-platform effort, while Quest 5.10 is a dated release in the older line. The maintainer announced Quest 5.10 on May 19, 2026, describing a refreshed editor UI and Quest Viva as the effort to make Quest cross-platform and usable offline. That announcement does not establish that Quest 5.10 is the latest release now.

How you can build a story

Start without code

The point-and-click editor lets authors describe rooms, objects, characters, and interactions in plain English. You can focus on the story and its rules without beginning by writing a program. The official introduction presents the editor as accessible to people without programming experience.

Choose a gamebook or a world to explore

A gamebook is organized around passages and choices: each decision sends the reader to another part of the narrative. A text adventure instead centers on a place and its contents, with rooms, objects, puzzles, and character interactions shaping progress. These are different authoring workflows, not just different names for the same structure.

Add control with scripting

When the editor’s point-and-click options are not enough, Quest provides visual scripting and a code view. The project’s materials describe tools for variables, conditions, loops, functions, and reusable behaviors. That gives a project room to develop from a straightforward branching story into one with more elaborate rules, without requiring every author to start at that level.

Media and presentation options

Quest materials describe support for images, sound and music, and embedded YouTube video, alongside options for customizing the interface. These features can help a story feel more like a designed game than plain text, but exact availability and behavior may depend on the Quest build and play environment. Check the documentation for the edition you intend to use before planning around a particular media format or interface feature.

Browser, desktop, saving, and sharing

Official Quest Viva materials describe browser-based authoring as well as downloadable desktop apps for multiple platforms. The project’s direction includes cross-platform and offline use, but the sources do not establish identical behavior or guaranteed offline capability for every platform and build. Consult the official repository for current project and download details.

The homepage says projects can be saved in browser storage or to a file. It also says creators can sell games they make. That statement is not a promise of sales, nor does it identify a particular marketplace or distribution program. Decide how you will preserve and distribute a finished game based on the options available in the specific build you use.

Is Quest a good fit for your project?

  • Choose it if: you want to make interactive fiction, a branching gamebook, or a room-based text adventure, and value beginning with a visual editor.
  • It may suit you as you grow: scripting and code view offer more control when you need conditional story logic or reusable behaviors.
  • Check before committing: confirm the current app download for your platform and verify media, offline, and publishing details against the specific version you plan to use.
  • Compare tools by workflow: look at no-code editing versus scripting depth, gamebook versus spatial adventure design, browser versus desktop use, media and UI customization, and export or hosting options. The available Quest materials do not establish a universal best tool or competitor ranking.
