Is Tetris Forever a game collection or an interactive documentary?
It is both, but the documentary is the organizing idea. Released for Tetris’ 40th anniversary, Tetris Forever combines playable games with documentary videos and historical material. Digital Eclipse describes it as the next entry in its Gold Master Series, with more than 15 playable games and over 90 minutes of documentary footage. The Tetris Company’s product page describes the featurettes as running for more than an hour; those are different official descriptions, not a single precise runtime. Nintendo’s listing similarly presents the release as 15+ games, a new game, and documentary videos. That combination makes the collection more than a menu of old versions: the historical material is central to how the package asks players to understand the games. The appeal is the chance to see Tetris as a changing body of games and ideas rather than a single fixed formula. The documentary-first approach gives the playable entries context, including titles and variants that may be less familiar than the best-known releases. The franchise’s scale helps explain why that history matters, though the figure should be read as a company statement: in its 2026 World Tetris Day press release, The Tetris Company reported more than 520 million copies sold worldwide and a presence on over 50 platforms. The official claim is more than 15 playable games, with some receiving releases outside Japan for the first time. The number signals variety, but it does not by itself mean the package is a comprehensive sampler of the most familiar or definitive Tetris editions. That distinction is reflected in the criticism. Digital Trends praised the documentary while describing the game collection as disjointed and incomplete-feeling. Siliconera also framed the package as documentary-first. Those are outlet judgments, not objective measures of the lineup; they point to a genuine tradeoff for prospective players. Does Tetris Time Warp add a modern game component?
