The Knightling builds its adventure around an unusual two-in-one tool: the shield is both the player’s weapon and the key to getting around. That gives its combat and platforming a shared focus, while its open-world structure makes it more accurate to call it an action-adventure with platforming than a conventional linear platformer.
Is The Knightling a platformer or an action-adventure game?
It is a single-player, open-world action-adventure with platforming. Developed by Twirlbound and published by Saber Interactive, The Knightling released on August 28, 2025. Its story follows a knight-in-training searching Clesseia for the missing Sir Lionstone, the mentor whose shield the hero takes up.
The shield is the game’s defining design idea, not just a defensive prop. Saber and the Steam listing describe using it to block and parry, then create openings for attacks and combos. It also enables movement abilities and platforming, linking combat to exploration rather than keeping those systems separate. That is the concrete basis for calling the game a fresh take: its central tool serves two core purposes.
Whether that approach appeals depends on what you want from an action platformer. Players drawn to movement-led exploration, a colorful fantasy setting and combat built around defensive timing have a clear reason to look closer. The official feature descriptions establish the intended design, not how well every mechanic works in play. In an August 29, 2025 review, TheSixthAxis called movement one of the game’s greatest achievements and identified its reviewed version as PS5; that is the reviewer’s assessment, not a universal verdict.

What platforms is The Knightling on?
Platform information differs between Saber Interactive’s announcement and its support FAQ. The March 19, 2025 release announcement named PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch. Saber’s current support FAQ lists Steam, Xbox Series X|S and PlayStation 5, but not Switch.
Because the official sources do not agree, the announcement alone is not enough to confirm current Switch availability. Check the live Nintendo eShop listing in your region if you are buying for Switch.

Is The Knightling available physically?
No physical release is planned “at this time,” according to Saber’s support FAQ. Steam lists a Deluxe Edition Upgrade, which adds in-game cosmetics, and the official soundtrack as digital add-ons. Those listings do not indicate a boxed game, physical soundtrack or other physical edition.
