Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is easiest to recommend to players who want a focused action RPG built around direct combat, exploration, and boss fights—not a sprawling, party-driven role-playing game. Its remastered presentation and selectable legacy options make this return more flexible, but they do not change the identity of the game underneath.

What kind of action RPG is Ys Memoire?

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana remasters Ys: The Oath in Felghana, itself a reimagining of Ys III: Wanderers From Ys. Falcom and Marvelous describe it as an action RPG. The earlier PC release’s description emphasizes fast action, exploration, tight controls, and intense boss encounters—an apt guide to its genre appeal, though details from that version should not automatically be treated as specifications for Memoire.

The setup is compact and personal. Adol Christin and Dogi return to Dogi’s homeland of Felghana after eight years away. Monsters threaten the area around town, the local volcano has become active again, and a new lord is exploiting the population. As Dogi seeks answers from his former combat master, Adol helps the townspeople and is drawn into conflicts involving conspiracies and the region’s past.

Who is likely to enjoy it?

Good fit: action-first RPG players

The central appeal is the action-RPG format: direct combat, exploration, and encounters with formidable bosses. Players who like a concentrated adventure with those elements at its center have a clear reason to try it. The earlier PC edition also offered six difficulty levels, Time Attack, and Boss Rush; those are confirmed features of that version, not a guarantee that every mode carries over unchanged to Memoire.

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana - Switch
  • Classic RPG Excitement Remastered Experience the old-school action RPG combat the Ys series is known for, with added difficulty options and quality-of-life enhancements like “Turbo” mode, as you fight your way through a memorable fantasy world
  • A Silent Protagonist No Longer Newly recorded voice acting for Adol Christin, including an opening narration that sets the stage for adventure, gives new depth and gravity to the famous hero
  • Refined Visual Variety Ys Memoire features all-new “Refined” character illustrations throughout the game, but players who want the original experience can switch to the “Classic” versions at a whim
  • A Sweeping Soundtrack Reborn Well-regarded for its outstanding soundtrack, this version features three different iterations of the epic score (Original, PC-8801, and X68000) for players to choose from, all remastered in high-quality audi

Less suitable: players looking for a sprawling party RPG

The official descriptions frame the game as an action RPG, not a large party-led or turn-based role-playing adventure. If what you want most is a broad ensemble cast and turn-based battles, this is a less natural match. That is a genre-fit judgment, not a claim that the game lacks story or exploration.

What does the Memoire edition change?

Memoire adds presentation choices and convenience features while returning to the same underlying game. The official descriptions specify:

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana - PS5
  • Classic RPG excitement Remastered Experience the old-school action RPG combat style the YS series is known for, with additional difficulty settings and quality of life improvements, such as "turbo" mode that lets you fight your way through an unforgettable fantasy world
  • No more silent protagonist. The voice actor for Adol Christin has been re-recorded, including an introductory commentary that sets the stage for the adventure, giving the popular hero a completely new depth
  • Enhanced Visual Variety Ys Memoire offers completely new "improved" character illustrations, but players who prefer the original experience can switch to the "classic" versions at their whim
  • A captivating soundtrack in a new form The version appreciated for its outstanding soundtrack offers players three different variants of epic film music (Original, PC-8801 and X68000), all newly mastered in high audio quality
  • New Adol voice acting: The edition adds newly recorded voice work for Adol, including opening narration. The western release offers English and Japanese voice options for him.
  • Two illustration styles: “Refined” character illustrations appear throughout, with “Classic” illustrations available as an option.
  • Three soundtrack versions: Choose among remastered arrangements identified as Original, PC-8801, and X68000.
  • Difficulty options and Turbo mode: These are presented as quality-of-life features. Turbo mode offers a faster way to move through the game, but no specific change to completion time is established.
  • Remastered presentation: Falcom and Marvelous describe high-definition visuals and music, as well as an improved framerate. Those are publisher claims; no independent performance measurements are established here.

The choices make Memoire more accommodating to different presentation preferences: players can opt for updated art or the classic look, and select the soundtrack version they prefer. They do not, by themselves, turn this focused action RPG into a different kind of game.

Which platforms and editions are confirmed?

Falcom lists Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5. Marvelous confirms digital editions for all three platforms and standard physical editions for Switch and PS5. Physical availability on PS4 is not confirmed by that announcement.

Do you need to play another Ys game first?

The official pages establish the game’s connection to Ys III: Wanderers From Ys, but do not establish a required series-entry order or whether prior series knowledge is necessary. The premise introduces Adol, Dogi, and the return to Felghana; there is not enough here to make a definitive continuity claim. If you are deciding based on genre, the more useful question is whether you want focused action, exploration, and boss encounters.

Verdict

Ys Memoire: The Oath in Felghana is worth considering if a compact, action-led RPG sounds appealing. Its clearest strengths as a fit are the focus on combat and boss encounters, plus the option to choose between updated and classic art and several soundtrack versions. The remaster makes the presentation more flexible, but the recommendation still hinges on whether you want this kind of action RPG—not on the idea that every fan of the broader genre must play it.
