Pac-Man, Super Mario Bros., Tetris and Super Mario 64 matter not just because they remain recognizable: each represents a turning point in how games reached and engaged players.
Why these games became childhood touchstones
Video-game childhoods span generations rather than one shared memory. The Swiss National Museum describes games as having shaped childhood across about three generations. That makes a history of “our childhood” less a definitive ranking than a look at titles whose influence extended beyond their original hardware and moment.
These four games trace a useful arc: Pac-Man helped make arcade games a mass-culture phenomenon; Super Mario Bros. became a defining home-console platform game; Tetris made portable play part of daily life; and Super Mario 64 helped demonstrate what three-dimensional console play could be.
Pac-Man took the arcade beyond the arcade
Pac-Man (1980): a maze chase with mass appeal
Released in 1980, Pac-Man became an early video-game mass-culture phenomenon. Its significance was visible outside the arcade: toys, songs, comics, television and other merchandise followed. The Strong National Museum of Play identifies that cross-media reach as part of the game’s impact, making Pac-Man a notable example of a video game becoming a broader entertainment property.

Pac-Man’s cultural footprint helped establish that a game character could be recognizable well beyond the people actively playing the game. That shift in visibility is one reason the title endures in histories of early gaming.
Super Mario Bros. helped define the home-console revival
Super Mario Bros. (1985): side-scrolling platform play
Super Mario Bros. arrived in 1985, during the recovery of the North American home-console market. The 1983 crash had several causes, including an oversaturated console market, competition from computers, and a surplus of heavily promoted, low-quality games. The industry began recovering as the Nintendo Entertainment System reached the United States in 1985; The Strong National Museum of Play connects the NES’s turnaround in large part with Super Mario Bros., not with the game acting alone.
The distinction matters: the game was a major part of a broader platform and market recovery. Nintendo’s official NES page describes a library of more than 500 titles, including Super Mario Bros. and The Legend of Zelda, and notes that the basic design of the NES controller became an industry standard. Together, games and hardware helped make the console a durable model for home play.

Nintendo reported in a September 13, 2010 anniversary article that the Super Mario Bros. series had sold more than 240 million units globally. That is Nintendo’s dated series-wide figure, not a current sales total for the original game.
Tetris made handheld gaming feel universal
Tetris (1984 onward): a puzzle game that traveled
Tetris was first programmed in 1984 and entered Western markets in 1987. Its worldwide breakthrough is closely associated with Nintendo packaging the game with the Game Boy in 1988, according to The Strong National Museum of Play. The pairing gave players a portable puzzle game suited to short sessions and helped establish the handheld as a place for games with broad, lasting appeal.
The dates describe different milestones, not one universal launch. Nintendo UK dates the Game Boy’s introduction in Japan alongside Tetris to 1989, while The Strong describes the 1988 package and release context behind Tetris’s worldwide rise. Those accounts should be read as distinct regional and commercial moments.

Super Mario 64 helped make 3D console play legible
Super Mario 64 (1996): exploration in three dimensions
By the mid-1990s, console games were moving from predominantly two-dimensional play toward three-dimensional worlds. Super Mario 64 is a useful example of that transition: instead of advancing only along a side-scrolling route, players moved through open 3D spaces and explored from a controllable viewpoint. HISTORY places the shift to 3D console games in this period, and Nintendo records the Nintendo 64’s Japanese launch on June 23, 1996.
The milestone was not simply more visual depth. Three-dimensional environments changed how players navigated space, approached objectives and understood movement in a game world. Super Mario 64 became one of the titles associated with making those interactions central to console play.

How the milestones compare
| Game | Era and platform | Core play | Why it mattered |
|---|---|---|---|
| Pac-Man | 1980 arcade | Maze chase | Early mass-culture reach, including toys, songs, comics and television |
| Super Mario Bros. | 1985 home console; Nintendo Entertainment System | Side-scrolling platform game | Helped anchor the NES-era recovery of home consoles |
| Tetris | Programmed in 1984; Western release in 1987; Game Boy pairing in 1988, with Nintendo dating Japanese Game Boy introduction alongside it to 1989 | Puzzle | Helped bring a widely appealing game to portable play and reached a worldwide audience |
| Super Mario 64 | Mid-1990s 3D console era; Nintendo 64 launched in Japan in 1996 | 3D exploration and platforming | Illustrated the move to three-dimensional console interaction |
This is a selection of historically representative milestones, not an objective ranking of the best games ever made. The evidence supports their distinct contributions, rather than a single score that can fairly compare an arcade hit, a handheld puzzle game and a 3D console adventure.
