Its deserted high school, séance-gone-wrong premise, stalking creature, and retro 1990s style make it a natural seasonal match—but “perfect” depends on how much tension and horror you enjoy.
What kind of horror game is Fear the Spotlight?
Fear the Spotlight is a single-player, third-person horror adventure developed by Cozy Game Pals and published by Blumhouse Games. Released on October 22, 2024, it follows Vivian and Amy as they enter Sunnyside High for a séance. When it goes wrong, Vivian must avoid a dangerous presence, find Amy, investigate a decades-old tragedy, and solve puzzles in the school.

The central loop combines stealth, exploration, and tactile puzzles. The school setting and stalking threat create pressure, while the story and investigation give Vivian a reason to keep moving through its rooms and corridors. The official description also highlights tense audio design and an additional storyline.
Why it works as a Halloween-season pick
A deserted school after dark, a séance, and a creature on the hunt are familiar horror ingredients, but the game’s presentation gives them a retro teen-horror character. Its low-poly visuals and controlled effects lean on atmosphere and tension rather than graphic detail alone.

That tone is reflected in how Bryan Singh, co-founder of Cozy Game Pals, describes the game: “Fear the Spotlight takes many cues from classic survival horror experiences, but this is far more a scary teen adventure than something like Silent Hill or Resident Evil.” That is the developer’s description of its intent, not a guarantee that every player will find the game mild.
Is Fear the Spotlight scary for horror newcomers?
It may be a more approachable starting point than horror focused on sustained intensity or combat, because its stated emphasis is on stealth, exploration, puzzles, and atmosphere. Singh said the team hoped it would appeal both to genre fans and to players new to horror games. That expresses an intended audience, not an objective measure of how frightening the game feels.
