Resident Evil Requiem moves the series beyond its recent focus on the Winters family and back toward the wider franchise story. Capcom has described two parallel paths for the series: numbered games that continue its ongoing story and remakes that revisit earlier chapters. The company has not named the next mainline game or given it a release date, so the next protagonist and plot remain unknown.
Where Resident Evil stands after Requiem
Capcom announced Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth main installment and released it on February 27, 2026. Its announcement lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 as platforms. Capcom describes the game as survival horror and the latest installment in the series. In Capcom’s 2025 integrated report, the company said Requiem runs through the franchise’s lore and lets players switch between first- and third-person perspectives. That report put the series’ sales at more than 170 million units at the time; it is a 2025 figure, not the latest total. Capcom Online Integrated Report 2025
Capcom later announced that Requiem had surpassed 5 million units sold and cumulative Resident Evil sales had exceeded 183 million units. Those are publisher-reported milestones announced March 4, 2026. Capcom’s March 4, 2026 announcement

Is Resident Evil 9 the end of the Winters story?
Not necessarily. Producer Masato Kumazawa described Resident Evil 7 and Resident Evil Village as exploring the wider world through incidents involving the Winters family. That framing supports a shift in emphasis toward the broader franchise story in Requiem; it does not establish that every Winters-related plotline is finished or that the family can never return. Capcom’s two paths for the series
In reporting on the BIOHAZARD 30th Special Mook, GamesRadar+ attributes this description of the strategy to Capcom executive producer Jun Takeuchi: “The current ‘Resident Evil’ series is being developed along two tracks: the numbered titles allow players to experience the ongoing story of the series, while the remake series allows them to experience the past.” The quote is reported secondhand; it describes the broad approach rather than a release schedule. - FEAR COMES HOME -- Fear, combat, exploration, and item management: these are the four pillars of survival horror, a genre that has never been more masterfully executed than in the gameplay of Resident Evil. The horror continues in the ground-breaking Resident Evil 7. Step into the new Isolated View and experience true survival horror in a world created by the all-new RE Engine.
- DEEP IN THE BAYOU - When Ethan Winters opened his inbox, the last thing he expected was to find an email from his wife; she had been missing for three years. The message was simple: "Come get me," and an address in Louisiana. This leads Ethan to a decrepit mansion in the heart of the bayou. The place has a seriously creepy vibe, but Ethan continues his search – until a stranger attacks him and knocks him unconscious. Ethan has no idea what awaits him when he wakes up...for he is now in the clutches of the Baker family.
- A NEW PERSPECTIVE -- In RESIDENT EVIL 7, we're changing the way you interact with the world. For this next major entry in the series, play from a first-person point of view, dramatically increasing your ability to become fully absorbed in the world we have created.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
| Track | What Capcom’s description means | What it does not confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Numbered games | Continue the ongoing story. | The next game’s title, protagonist, setting or release date. |
| Remakes | Let players revisit the past. | That a remake is the next mainline entry or determines the direction of the numbered story. |
Takeuchi also reportedly said Capcom is thinking ahead to when remakes catch up with numbered games. That is a strategic outlook, not a dated plan or confirmation of what will happen when the lines converge.
What is confirmed about the next mainline game?
Nothing specific in the available Capcom statements: the next numbered title, its lead character, setting and release window have not been announced in the sources cited here. Capcom’s 2025 report discusses preparing developers for future Resident Evil titles, but does not identify the next mainline game. The two-track strategy explains the shape of the franchise, not which game comes next. Capcom Online Integrated Report 2025

- TERRIFYING ZOMBIES WAITING AROUND EVERY CORNER -- Driven by insatiable hunger, these creatures act on instinct, gnashing their teeth, ripping at flesh, and devouring their victims. The new immersive camera lets you feel their fangs as they sink into your flesh.
- RACCOON CITY, REBUILT IN INTRICATE DETAIL -- The characters, environments, and story have all been rebuilt from the ground up to create a terrifying world that feels both nostalgic and new.
- NEW FOR PLAYSTATION5 – Upgraded features new to the PlayStation5 version of the game include a higher frame rate, 3D audio, added ray tracing, and engaging DualSense support for Haptic Feedback and Adaptive Triggers.
A separate report has named a Code: Veronica remake as a future project, but that claim is not corroborated here by a primary Capcom announcement. Even if confirmed, a remake would belong to the past-facing track and would not, by itself, answer what follows Requiem in the numbered story. GamesRadar+’s report on a possible Code: Veronica remake

- For the current mainline story: play Resident Evil Requiem, the ninth main installment.
- To follow the Winters-era incidents: play Resident Evil 7 biohazard and Resident Evil Village. They provide context for that part of the series, though Capcom’s framing places them within a wider world.
- To revisit earlier chapters: choose remakes as they become available on your platform. They revisit the past rather than serving as a substitute for the ongoing numbered-game story.
For Requiem, Capcom’s announcement names PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2. Check the current store listing for platform-specific availability and edition details.
