It supports the idea of a return to horror roots—but this short slice cannot establish how the full game balances horror and action.
What happens in the TGS 2025 demo?
In GosuGamers’ hands-on account, Grace Ashcroft begins restrained and upside down. She tips her chair to escape, then enters an abandoned hospital filled with flickering lights and medical equipment. Her immediate goal is to find a fuse to open an electronic gate.
Getting the fuse means going deeper into the hospital to find a toolbox, while a large creature stalks her. The writers describe avoiding the pursuer as pivotal to survival. The sequence therefore links exploration and a simple objective to the threat of being caught, rather than presenting the hospital as a safe place to search.
GosuGamers characterizes the demo as a short extension of material from the reveal trailer. Its writers say the slice retained light puzzles, exploration, dread and grisly creature design. Those are impressions of one brief hands-on sequence, not a verdict on the whole game. Read GosuGamers’ TGS demo impressions.

Does this look like a return to Resident Evil’s horror roots?
The demo’s strongest case is in what it puts the player through: Grace is vulnerable, the hospital is enclosed, progress depends on searching for an item, and a pursuer makes that search dangerous. Together, those details foreground tension and survival over a straightforward combat showcase. They fit the series’ horror vocabulary, though a short preview cannot show whether that emphasis holds across the full game.
That emphasis also matches Capcom’s stated intent. Producer Masato Kumazawa said, “In this title, which aims to focus on horror, we introduce Grace as a new, relatable protagonist, who is unlike previous protagonists Leon or Chris.” He also described a story rooted in Raccoon City and Umbrella Corporation’s secret machinations. Kumazawa’s PlayStation.Blog Q&A further explains the aim of maintaining tension throughout the experience.

- A NEW ERA OF SURVIVAL HORROR — Experience the ninth mainline Resident Evil adventure, blending terrifying survival horror with pulse-pounding action in an immersive new chapter.
- TWO INTERTWINED JOURNEYS — Experience the story through FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft and legendary agent Leon S. Kennedy, each bringing a distinct gameplay style to the nightmare.
- SURVIVE AS GRACE ASHCROFT — Step into terrifying survival horror as FBI analyst Grace Ashcroft faces deadly threats and fights to escape death.
- TAKE ACTION AS LEON S. KENNEDY — Dive into pulse-pounding action with legendary agent Leon S. Kennedy as the two protagonists’ journeys collide.
- RETURN TO RESIDENT EVIL — Enter the latest mainline chapter of Capcom’s iconic survival horror series for a chilling experience built around fear, tension, and action.
Capcom describes the game’s survival-horror elements as including combat, exploration and puzzle-solving. That mix matters: “return to horror roots” does not mean the absence of combat, and the TGS slice alone says little about how much of the finished game is spent evading threats versus fighting them.
First-person or third-person: what did the writers prefer?
GosuGamers’ writers say they enjoyed this sequence more in third-person than first-person. That is their preference, not a controlled comparison or a universal recommendation; the account does not specify why one view worked better for them.

In practical terms, first-person places the view closer to Grace’s immediate surroundings, while third-person keeps Grace visible and can show more of the space around her. Capcom says players can choose either perspective to suit their play style. Its description makes the options relevant to the demo, but does not establish that one is more frightening or effective for every player.

GosuGamers’ TGS account centers on Grace and notes that Capcom had not revealed Leon’s presence at the event. Do not read the demo’s Grace-only focus as evidence that Leon was part of that particular slice—or infer from later materials that he appeared there.

Capcom’s later announcements and the PlayStation Store listing for a separate, later PS5 demo discuss both Grace’s survival-horror gameplay and Leon’s action gameplay. What was announced about the full game?
Capcom’s September 16, 2025 announcement identified Resident Evil Requiem as the ninth main installment, built with RE ENGINE, and listed PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC. It gave February 27, 2026 as the release date—a date that has now passed. The TGS impressions describe a preview, not a review of the released game. See Capcom’s announcement.
For series-wide context, Capcom reported cumulative Resident Evil game sales of more than 174 million as of June 30, 2025. That figure covers the franchise, not Requiem. Capcom’s Integrated Report 2025 gives an earlier cutoff of March 31, 2025; the later June cutoff is the more current figure.
Earlier in the preview cycle, Capcom said the first playable demo was exhibited at Gamescom 2025 and announced four Gamescom Awards for the game. That is release-cycle context, not independent evidence of the TGS demo’s quality. Read Capcom’s Gamescom announcement.
