Its mix of exploring, talking with residents, and piecing together clues makes it a natural fit for players who want a relaxed, story-led mystery. There is one platform-specific caveat: a Nintendo Life review of the Switch version noted visual issues, which it found less noticeable in handheld mode.
What kind of game is On Your Tail?
You play as Diana, an amateur writer who heads to the seaside town of Borgo Marina in search of inspiration after a rejection. Her getaway is interrupted by an enigmatic thief, turning the vacation into a mystery that draws her into the lives of the town’s residents.
The game blends detective work with the rhythms of a town adventure. Exploring Borgo Marina, meeting locals, pursuing quests, and following personal stories all feed into the central investigation. The setting is more than a backdrop: conversations and local storylines are part of how Diana learns what happened and who might be involved. Steam describes it as a single-player adventure focused on investigation, relationships, and local stories.
How does the investigation work?
Clues are gathered and interpreted rather than simply presented as a sequence of answers. The chronolens lets Diana inspect crime scenes and view how they looked before a crime, offering a way to compare the scene’s past with what she finds in the present. Nintendo describes the detective side as a combination of investigation, interrogation, and deduction through card-game-inspired gameplay.

That structure gives the mystery a distinct place alongside the more relaxed town activities. You can spend time getting to know residents and following quests, then use what you uncover to make sense of the case. The official descriptions establish that mix, but don’t specify how long the game takes or how challenging its puzzles are.
Does the vacation setting make it worth playing?
Borgo Marina’s Ligurian-inspired atmosphere is the game’s clearest draw. Nintendo Life’s Switch review praised the setting, and Steam’s listing features a KeenGamer review excerpt that calls out the ambience, townspeople, and mysteries. The appeal is not just a picturesque destination: the town’s residents and their stories give the investigation its social context.
If you want a tightly focused crime puzzle with little time spent outside the case, the town-life elements may be less central to your tastes. If you enjoy a gentler pace in which exploring and conversations sit alongside clue-solving, On Your Tail has a coherent vacation-mystery premise.
How does the Switch version look?
Nintendo Life’s review of the Switch version reported visual issues and said they seemed less noticeable in handheld mode. That is a finding from one review of the Switch release, not a benchmark across platforms or a statement about the game after later updates. Nintendo lists TV, tabletop, and handheld play modes, so handheld is an option if the reviewed presentation issues concern you.

The available review evidence does not establish whether subsequent patches changed the Switch version’s visuals. It also does not support extending the Switch review’s observations to the PC edition.

For players looking for a cozy mystery, On Your Tail offers an appealing combination: a coastal town to explore, residents to get to know, and a detective story supported by a time-viewing crime-scene tool and deduction gameplay. The Switch version has a documented presentation caveat in Nintendo Life’s review, with visuals reportedly less troublesome in handheld mode. On the evidence available, this is a qualified recommendation for players who want the vacation atmosphere as much as the investigation.
