If scratching a physical Steam Wallet card has made its code unreadable, stop scraping it and contact Steam Support through its damaged-code process. Steam asks for a clear, unedited photo or scan of the entire back of the card. Keep the original card and its matching retail receipt while you work through the steps below.
Before contacting Steam Support
First check whether the code is actually damaged or whether it may be a typing or activation issue. Steam lists several characters that are easy to confuse: 0/Q/O/D, 1/I, B/8, and G/6. Recheck the printed characters carefully, but do not rub, scrape, edit, or mark the card; further handling could remove more of the code.

If you bought the card recently, allow several hours for the retailer to activate it. If the code still fails after that, or characters are genuinely missing, use Steam’s support route for a damaged or unreadable Wallet code. Steam’s guidance does not specify a guaranteed response time or promise that every damaged code can be recovered.
How to submit a damaged Steam card
- Keep the physical card. Do not discard it or attempt to reconstruct missing characters by scraping the surface.
- Take a clear photo or scan of the entire back. Steam Support says the image should show the complete back of the card. Do not edit or mark the card.
- Keep the matching retail receipt. Steam’s Steam Wallet FAQ asks for the receipt if the usual code checks do not resolve the problem.
- Contact Steam Support using its damaged-code instructions. Send the card image through the official support channel, not in a public post or to an unsolicited helper.
Steam’s exact instruction is: “When contacting Steam Support about a damaged or unreadable Steam Wallet code it is extremely important to provide us with a clear photo or scan of the entire back side of the Steam Wallet card.” It also says: “Please do not edit or mark the card.”

Choose the right help route

Protect the card and avoid scams
Do not post the full code publicly or send it to someone who contacts you claiming they can recover it. Steam says Wallet gift cards can only be redeemed on Steam and warns that requests to pay someone with Steam cards are likely scams. Requests involving taxes, bail, debts, prizes, or delivery fees are strong warning signs.
If you have not given the code away, take the card to the retailer’s customer-service desk and ask about refund eligibility. If you already shared the code, keep the card and receipt and report the incident to local police; Steam also points U.S. users to the FTC. See Steam’s guidance on gift card scams.

What to expect from physical gift cards
Steam says it expects retailers to run out of physical gift-card stock by the end of 2026. That is Steam’s expectation, not a confirmed count of stock at every retailer. Existing physical cards remain redeemable, subject to local laws. A damaged code should still be handled through Steam’s support process rather than treated as unusable solely because physical cards are being phased out.
To redeem a readable code yourself, Steam requires you to sign in and use its Redeem a Steam Gift Card or Wallet Code page; wallet currency conversion is handled there.
