Sonic X Shadow Generations is an easy recommendation for Sonic fans who want to revisit the series’ history and see Shadow lead a substantial new adventure. The package combines a remaster of Sonic Generations, starring Classic and Modern Sonic, with the new Shadow Generations campaign. Critics praised the pairing, though bugs and technical limitations keep it from being a flawless release.

What’s included in Sonic X Shadow Generations?

This is a two-campaign package, not just an updated version of the earlier Sonic Generations. The remastered game brings back its Classic and Modern Sonic stages, while Shadow Generations gives Shadow a separate new adventure. SEGA described the release as two high-speed adventures when it announced the game for October 25, 2024. SEGA’s release announcement lists PlayStation 4 and 5, Nintendo Switch, Xbox One and Series X|S, Steam, and Epic Games Store.

The appeal for longtime fans is the combination: familiar stages and series references in Sonic’s campaign, alongside a story and starring role built around Shadow. Nintendo Life praised both campaigns in its Switch review and called Shadow’s new chapter a highlight. Its assessment is specifically of the Switch version.

Why critics recommend it—and what holds it back

MeriStation rated the game 9/10 and recommended it particularly to devoted fans, seeing the remaster and Shadow addition as a strong celebration of the series. A review excerpt attributed to MeriStation and published through Metacritic on October 21, 2024, put the verdict plainly: “Sonic X Shadow Generations is the Sonic game we didn’t know we needed. It’s a must have for Sonic fans.” The excerpt is publication-attributed; no individual reviewer is named there.

The praise comes with meaningful qualifications. MeriStation noted bugs affecting both games, issues inherited from the original Sonic Generations, and that Shadow Generations does not run at native 4K/60 fps. These are that publication’s review findings, not a guarantee that every player or platform will have the same experience. Read MeriStation’s review for its full assessment.

Which version should you choose?

Platform and format matter. SEGA says Xbox and PC versions are digital only; physical editions are listed for PlayStation and Nintendo platforms. The Nintendo Switch 2 edition, released June 5, 2025, is a separate release from the original Switch version. SEGA’s Japanese site lists the formats by platform, while Nintendo’s US listing says the original Switch game is supported on Switch 2 and behaves consistently with the Switch version. Check SEGA’s platform and format listing and Nintendo’s US listing for the original Switch game before buying.

If you are deciding between the Switch and Switch 2 releases, MeriStation’s Switch 2 port review says the newer edition improves on the original Switch version but remains technically behind PS5 and Xbox Series X. It describes different resolution and frame-rate choices for Shadow Generations, with a quality/performance tradeoff. Those are review findings, not a universal performance guarantee. See MeriStation’s Switch 2 port review.

  • Want both campaigns? Each listed edition pairs the Sonic remaster with the new Shadow adventure.
  • Want a physical copy? SEGA lists physical formats for PlayStation and Nintendo platforms; Xbox and PC are digital only.
  • Choosing between Switch releases? The Switch 2 edition is separate. Compare its port tradeoffs with the original Switch version’s support on Switch 2.

How popular has it been?

SEGA reported on January 24, 2025, that worldwide sales had surpassed two million units, combining physical and downloaded sales across all platforms. That is a company-reported sales figure, not an independently audited count or a measure of review quality. SEGA’s announcement gives the date and sales basis.
