Its strongest appeal is the relative rarity of its rail-shooter format and its striking space setting; a 2021 review, however, found the campaign repetitive and uneven.
What kind of game is Redout: Space Assault?
Redout: Space Assault is a single-player space combat game developed and published by 34BigThings. It shares the Redout universe and story, but not the racing genre of the 2016 Redout. Steam lists its PC release as January 22, 2021, and the PlayStation Store lists that date for PS4. Metacritic also records versions for iOS, Xbox One and Nintendo Switch; platform availability can vary by storefront and region.
The PlayStation Store places the campaign in 2395, as humanity begins colonizing Mars. You play Leon Barret, a pilot in the Poseidon Security Forces, amid a conflict over expansion from a depleted Earth and crowded Moon. The official description frames the story around loyalty and the consequences of the player’s choices. PlayStation Store
Is it like Star Fox?
In broad strokes, yes: the game uses guided shooting and evasive movement associated with classic rail shooters. Meristation compared its structure to Star Fox and Panzer Dragoon, while emphasizing that this is a different genre from the original Redout. Expect a shooter that borrows from the rail-shooter tradition, not a direct successor to Star Fox or a racing game.

Meristation describes semi-guided flight, movement across the screen, a dodge, lock-on missiles and automatic forward gunfire by default. Those are the controls as that review describes them; the reviewer felt they lacked the fluidity the game needed. Meristation’s review
How combat, missions and upgrades fit together
The campaign alternates its guided combat with some freer exploration, high-speed sequences and fights against capital ships. During missions, you steer around threats and aim missiles while attacking enemies. The change-ups offer more than a single uninterrupted rail-shooter format, though they do not eliminate the repetition noted in Meristation’s review.

The PlayStation description says missions unlock cards and tokens used to upgrade the ship’s hull, shields, energy weapons and missiles. It also lists several weapons and says players can choose, upgrade and install multiple instances. That gives the campaign a layer of loadout progression alongside its combat. PlayStation Store
What does the campaign do well, and where does it struggle?
Meristation’s March 22, 2021 review praised the visual atmosphere and the game’s place in a relatively uncommon rail-shooter niche. Its criticisms were more substantial: a repetitive campaign, uneven pacing, controls that did not feel fluid enough, difficulty spikes, bugs and signs of a mobile-game heritage. These are that reviewer’s assessments, not a guarantee that every player or platform version will have the same experience.
